Antique Pistol - M.Berg 30 cal - 09/28/20 12:51 AM

A guy I know inherited this gun from his dad, but he doesn't know anything about it. Any estimate on the age or any other info? Is there a special name for this type of gun? We have been looking online and can't find anything quite like it.

Thanks

I’m no expert but that’s the only derringer I have ever seen with that type of elaborate sight. My guess is they were added, meaning M. Berg would only be the sight manufacturer.

That’s pretty cool never seen anything like it either . I wonder if it’s something a gunsmith in that time era just decided to whip up. ?

Haven’t been there in years, but Collectors Firearms in Houston used to be an authority on antique firearms. You might check with them.

similar to the colt #3 deringer, 1870s era, I think you may be right, looks like a govt. carbine may have been reworked since it is U.S. 30 cal. pretty sure that is a military mark.

this one is a .41 cal.

Most of those single shot pocket guns opened by sliding the barrel to the side, and fired rim fire cartridges, that one looks to tilt forward to open and appears to be a center fire, would be very interested in what you find out about it.

might try here, I have been in 2 of their high end locations and some extremely knowledgeable folks that I talked to about a shotgun.

email a pic and see what happens?

Yes very similar to that one. I would say half of it is almost identical to that one, but the barrel is different.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Maybe we'll figure it out.

Could that be some type of insert inside the flare barrel?

Here's another pic

Just a wild guess...Is it possible someone with talent converted the flare gun to make it a 30 cal? Looks like they might have added the 30 cal. chamber to what was a 10 gauge chamber.

That’s sure what it looks like.

Pretty sure it is a conversion. I found great pictures of the Remington here ( link ) and everything matches up. If we removed the site I bet it would say Remington Mark III like this...

here's the original barrel

It has 2 stamps that begin with 13 like this, but we did not remove the grip to check for these stamps

it looks like a gunsmith made an insert for the 10 guage if you look at it....then scavenged the barrel out of something else??
