Still living at home - 09/07/20 12:44 PM
52% of 18 to 29 year old's are still living with one or more of their parents.
This number surpasses the previous record of 48%, which was set in 1940.
The lowest percentage of 18 to 29 year old's living at home was 29% in 1960.
Worthless, but Interesting stats. I was YOYO (your on your own) at 17 by choice.
What age were you when you flew the nest for good?

21.
But now at 50, I'm pulling my parents out of the prisoner camp of a retirement community and moving back in with them in me. Moving to the country. They were gracious enough to get me through the first 21 years (with out killing me) and I will happily help them through their final years.

I left home at 17 and have never been back.
Those recent numbers are inflated due to COVID too. Not an excuse but it's the current reality. I know a few who had to move back in with their folks temporarily due to lay offs or other transitions.

26 for me. I waited 5 years before entering college outta HS and then graduated and moved home for the summer. Grandma died and I moved into her house until I met my wife and we got our own place. My daughter is 25 and still living with us......and her stinkin' meowing cat! All I know is that I have softened over the years.

18 for me. Graduated HS and moved out that weekend. I had about a day and a half to get things lined out at my new place, and left for a 30 day hitch on a drilling rig in the Oklahoma panhandle.

went off to college at 17,never went back...was raised in small town in east Tenn....not many jobs so had to go elsewhere....
Stayed at my folks house the summer after my freshman year in college. After that I was either in summer school at UT or in Vietnam with the US Army and 500K+ of my closest friends. When I got home from Nam I spent one week at home, found an apartment and left for good.

Off to college at 17. Left college a couple years later to join the USAF. Did finish the degree before I retired from the military. Parents actually moved to a new house/town a month before I graduated from high school and didn't sell the house until a month or so later, so I was living there alone for the last month of high school.

Re: Still living at home - 09/07/20 02:19 PM
I moved out at 17, a month before I graduated from HS in 1975. Dad gave me his last "My House, My Rules" speech. But my best friends youngest daughter still lives at home with them after graduating 4 years ago with a law degree. The problem is her $250,000 in student loans. She is paying them off and plans to move out when she is debt free. Sooner or later the expense of putting someone through college will have to be addressed. It shouldn't be just for the wealthy or those lucky enough to get a scholarship. I worked full time and it took me 8 years to graduate, but I did it debt free. No way could I do that today.

19 but not my choice, my folks moved to a different state and I had a girlfriend I "loved" so I could not move with them. Broke up 3-4 months later and I could not stomach going back to my folks house.
My son is 22 and lives at home, I told him we will only pay for college if he lives at home to save cash. UNT is 25 minutes away. He is chompin at the bit to leave though.

Nope. Graduated the end of May 1984, moved from a town of about 3000 people to Phoenix Arizona a week later to go to trade school UTI. I was blessed with the best parents on the planet. I’m now returning the favor and I’m a caregiver for my 93-year-old dad who lives on our place with us.

Even in Texas the housing market, owning or renting, makes it virtually impossible for a single person to afford a place of their own when they have a degree and an average job. It just costs way too much in DFW, at least for a decent, secure and safe area...

If you don't get them out of the house by the mid 20's, they will become a parasite and never leave
