Scraped my head on a big nest in mesquite tree limb while riding a horse, as a kid.

I’ve never been stung by a dead yella jacket

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/02/20 07:47 PM

I vote don't kill. See how long you can coexist with them without being stung. It could be a turning point in bee/human relations. You could get a Nobel Peace Prize.

I believe those are paper wasps and please kill them before they find their way to one of my deer blinds with all the rest

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/02/20 07:59 PM

I don't have a kill on sight rule with the yellow jackets, but I do with the Red Devils (red wasps). The Red Devils are way too aggressive. Got nailed a month ago just putting a padlock on a pump house door. 5 hits on the back of the neck. They're all dead now.

That said, I would probably kill them.

They normally won't bother till this end of this month or early September when the little ones start coming out, then you will wish like hell you took care of it earlier.

^^^This but if you decide to kill them leave the nest . IME they don't seem to build another nest near an older one .

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/03/20 06:03 PM

Let them decide. Send some Spectracide their way and let them and the spectracide fight it out.

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/03/20 06:28 PM

Get your BB gun out and pick them off while they're on the nest. When you get good enough to hit them in mid-air, you're ready for dove season.

They are great predators. I have them and never kill them, they patrol my garden all day. In early spring if they try to build a nest near the door I just knock it down and they move off. I haven’t been stung in at least 30 years.

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/04/20 05:25 PM

Those kind always give me trouble, the bigger red ones never bother me. I have a pretty big garden and the red ones are always on and around the plants even when I am tending it and picking vegetables. They prey on all the things that want to eat my plants. I have never been stung or even approached in a menacing way by them. I only kill the red ones when they make a nest in a spot that is inconvenient, other than that I leave them alone and they leave me alone, the smaller light yellow ones I spray every single nest.

Re: To kill or not..... - 08/04/20 05:31 PM

Those are actually paper wasps and not yellow jackets. Paper wasps are more docile than yellow jackets and generally leave you leave them alone. Just thought you may want to be educated on your opponent. I’d kill them if it were me.
