Stock market crash predictions - 02/23/20 08:16 PM

I don’t understand how supposedly some experts are predicting a recession from an all time high. Not even talking about the first sign of the market going down a correction. I think this is the left media way of creating a crash for political reasons.

The stock market is manipulated by China. They buy huge amounts of stock which gives the public this illusion of a bull market when in reality, we’re on the brink of a financial disaster. This is another reason we need to declare war on China

Of course all of this was done at the behest of the Trilateral Commission

Looks to me like the liberal disinformation campaign the dems did in 2008, just trying it again, they don’t care if it hurts the country if it delivers power and money back into their hands. (And their families hands)

Stock Market has been overinflated by "speculation" rather than sound market principles. May not crash soon, but a good size correction is in order.

An inverted yield curve, when short term bond yields trade higher than long term yields. Its been a bellwether for predicting a recession. I've been watching this for several months and it normally happens within a year.
As usual there are differing opinions on it from different sources.

China has a long and recent history of Enronesque accounting practices. But, it’s worse over there due to very little regulation (lacking a quality SEC oversight).....and their government turns a blind eye to economic corruption

Obama has Zero interest rates his whole term. Trump has had many interest rate increases to slow down the economy. Also Trump the only one to go after China to clean up the Democrats mess. Theses are major factors not mentioned in your graph or the liberal media

I personally made 30% last year in the market. Best I did with Obama was 12%.

Probably not much longer. A lot of the latest push upwards was companies buying back their stock with their tax breaks. Trump want's to keep pushing "stories" that keep the market heading up. That fuels the spec market. Fake trade deals with China, no threat to the USA with the virus, etc. All engineered stories to make the market go up, because Trump thinks the Market is the Economy.

I reduced my retirement account equity exposure about 80% this month, moving funds to short/medium term bonds, insurance contracts and REITs. Will stay there until virus fears start to abate, then back heavy into risk assets. Markets usually perform well in election years. If the Bern gets the Dem nomination the market will do very well anticipating a Republican landslide in November.

Big mistake. The market is for long term investments. Your trying to time the market which is nearly impossible. By the time you get back in the market has already recovered substantially and you missed a big part of it

Bernie already said he the world is ending in 11 years now. Unless we get rid of a majority of jobs . How is anyone going to survive with no transportation from fossil fuels

Agree; rebalance/adjust your accounts to reduce risk as you age; but trying to time the market with transaction fee laden selling and buying is close to impossible. Would I support heavy discount buying during the years after a crash; yes

All of you with the orange headed idol are a little touchy these days. And btw, no handouts here. Comfortably retired, no debt, significant investment that will be affected by a recession. Still, I would sacrifice the market gains for sanity. Not impressed with the dems likely to get the nomination, but certainly would prefer them over the imbecile, reality TV show star we now have. Donothin do you seriously mean that you would or will vote for Sanders ? Or just not vote? If you will vote for his is it because you are retired already? So the Income tax at 52% on anyone making over $32 k or whatever the number is doesn't bother you since you don't have income?

I am asking seriously , I struggle to understand voting for a person who has been quoted endorsing Fidel Castro's vision , or quoted in saying that illegals are entitled to the same benefits and voter eligibility as citizens.

As I said, I am not impressed with any of the top Dems who are likely to be nominated. Sanders is on a run, but there is no chance that the programs he is advocating will pass congress. I doubt that the national debt run up by Sanders would be any worse than Trumps, which I find disturbing.. And, yes I am retired, but my income is a lot more than the $32k you mentioned. I do think the wealth in this country is unfairly apportioned to the very wealthy and somehow we need to find a way to equalize. Trump just made it worse with his tax cut.

I, like the free enterprise system with constraints, but many of the checks on monopolism have been removed and the leverage one has as they eliminate competition is just too much for the small business.

I wish we could have more meaningful discussions here, but I've given up, but thank you for your question.

We all want a Utopia but there is no viable path to it. I just think even holding your nose and voting for anything left right now is a bad thing.

Socialism has already planted roots here with Obama care, pre obamacare yes my family's insurance was high but it still worked and we went the same dr for years. Now , our insurance is even higher and unusable.

Re: Stock market crash predictions - 02/24/20 05:22 PM

Thank you Tiltman.

Monopoly. Spell check error.

Some form of socialism has been here since the pony express. Highways, airports, military, VA, medicare, post office, highway dept plus numerous others. Socialistic programs have a limited place in our system. I would prefer the free market when it works. Democratic socialism is not a form of government, but an economic system. I am much more afraid of an authoritarian form of government I think is a threat under Trump. Congress needs to take back the authority the have ceded to the President.

Health care is a major issue and no one seems to have the answer. I think everyone should have access to some level of basic care other than the emergency room of public hospitals. The cost of that should be spread over all rather than just those who have health issue and the money for care having it added to their bill.

I am not faulting the rich, but huge advantage they have from their leverage they have from the economics of scale, their ability to influence policy to their advantage with money is an issue.

Heck they were talking it UP just a week ago. Some were predicting gains approaching 20%. I own NVDA (not as much now as I did last week) and the analysts were talking like it might jump 20-30%. I think when this coronavirus threats is over there could be some real buying opportunities. There will be good companies that get dragged down with the market.

The smarter play would be keep holding short until this mess with the virus gets resolved. Only thing up today was tons of 3x leveraged bear ETFs. And gold related stocks/ETFs. And biotech companies working on a vaccine.

Does that mean that you think the child of a non-citizen resident that is not paying taxes should be refused medical help? Does it mean that those non-citizens that are paying taxes should have health care available?

Truth is I'm sure many of the non citizens who are employed are paying taxes and in many cases not entitled to the benefits. Have no idea of what the net effect is except there are many industries that will have a hard time surviving without them. We definitely need a worker policy.

But unless you are willing to say no health care for those who can't pay, you are not being intellectually honest by not being supportive of a plan that will take care of them.

Re: Stock market crash predictions - 02/25/20 12:51 AM

Just being employed and paying taxes isn’t enough. Minimum wage jobs were never intended for someone to raise a wife and kids on. Immigration both legal and illegal from third world countries with no job skills , no education is the root cause for many of our problems. Including health care and public education. Illegals shouldn’t even be here let alone are taxpayers responsible for any of there health care

Re: Stock market crash predictions - 02/25/20 03:05 PM

Quote
By Craig Fehr February 24, 2020
The spreading virus raises the temperature on the market.
The U.S. equity market was down more than 2% on Monday (Feb. 24) as reports over the weekend showed that confirmed cases of the coronavirus have picked up outside China, including outbreaks in South Korea and Italy. Somewhat encouraging, the pace of new reported cases within China has moderated slightly, but the economic impact in the world's second-largest economy is increasingly significant given ongoing factory closures, supply chain disruptions and city lockdowns that are wiping out a large portion of consumer spending.
The economic impact is meaningful but temporary.
U.S. economic growth is likely to take a modest hit this quarter as efforts to contain the virus have curbed air travel, international business activity and domestic companies’ foreign production and sales in China. As a result, U.S. GDP growth is likely to drop below 2% this quarter for the first time since late 2018.

That said, we don’t think this will knock the economy off its expansionary path, as U.S. household spending (70% of the economy) is less affected at this point. GDP growth contracted by 1.1% in Q1 2014 due to severe weather (remember the “polar vortex”?), dropped to 0.1% in Q4 2015 as oil prices and production plunged and fell to 1.1% in Q4 2018 amid Federal Reserve rate hikes and the manufacturing slump. None of these marked a recessionary turn with GDP rising in the following quarters.1

A prescription for higher volatility.
Stocks don't take well to uncertainty, and given the ongoing uncertainty around the effectiveness and timelines of containment efforts, it's unlikely market anxiety will subside quickly. This is not insignificant for near-term market performance, as we believe global GDP and corporate earnings estimates will need to be revised lower for the first half of 2020.

That said, we don't view this as a turning point in the economic expansion, nor do we see this as a catalyst for more restrictive monetary policy. Some economic output will be lost, but most will be delayed. As such, we'd expect a rebound in Chinese and global growth in future quarters. The foundation of this bull market has been (and will continue to be) an expanding economy, rising corporate profits and accommodative Fed policy – all of which are poised to remain intact for the year ahead.

Monday’s drop (2/24/2020) is the largest daily drop in the stock market in more than six months. A drop of 1,000 points in the Dow is certainly an attention grabber, but a wider view provides a much more useful perspective. Even with today's decline, the stock market is still up year-to-date and has gained 19% over the past 12 months. Moreover, stock market volatility has been notably subdued for the past several months, so a return of volatility should be viewed as more the norm than the exception. Over the past three years, the S&P 500 has had 19 days in which it fell more than 2% – none of which kicked off a longer-term downturn.2
We doubt the growing risks related to the coronavirus outbreak will blow over immediately, so further volatility should be anticipated. But we also doubt this will permanently impair the broader fundamental backdrop of economic expansion and low interest rates, supporting the case for the bull market to persist as we advance through 2020.

I see. So I would have to had said "I was contented" as its in the past tense there. In this case it was present tense so "I am content" would be more appropriate. Makes sense. I have heard it used both ways. But that makes more sense if you think about it.

Its nice when you can learn something on the Forum.

You can thank the news media for the stock market crash, 80,000 people died from the common flu last winter, to date about 2700 people have died from the corona virus.

Re: Stock market crash predictions - 02/25/20 07:10 PM

Here is part of a song I wrote to commemorate this occasion...

She's a good market, loves her Trump
Loves Bitcoin and Greenbacks too
She's a good market, who's crazy 'bout Amazon
Loves Apple and Tesla too

And it's a long day livin' in in front of a computer screen
There's a freeway runnin' in front of the building
And I'm a bad boy, cause I’m just a big fat piker
I'm a bad boy for freaking out too

Now the market is free
Free fallin'
Yeah, It’s free
Free fallin'

Why blame the media? People dying from the flu is not news, the coronavirus is new and is news. Anyway, Trump said it will die down by April when it warms up.

This is not insignificant for near-term market performance, as we believe global GDP and corporate earnings estimates will need to be revised lower for the first half of 2020.

.

Will be interesting to see his comments after today ....

The financial brains are resting easy now. National Economic Director Larry Kudlow said today the coronavirus is “contained” in the United States despite the fact that public health officials warned earlier in the day that the virus will likely begin spreading throughout the country.

“We have contained this,” Kudlow, President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser, said during an interview with CNBC. “I won’t say airtight, but pretty close to airtight.”

Couldn’t what he is saying and what the public health officials are saying mean that, as of today, it is contained in the US, but as it spreads in other countries, it could spread to the US in larger numbers.

In other words, he is addressing the current cases in the US, and the CDC is saying, as it spreads around the world, there is a chance it could spread here? Can’t both be true? There are people coming in from countries every day. It could become an issue.
As it is today, we have it contained.

Edit: yes, that’s exactly what he was saying. Fake news from TG.

For me, personally I couldn’t figure out for years if it was the American guilt or the white guilt that bothered me more. Then one day I was sitting in my pool watching my yard guys do their thing. Truth be told it’s all my fault. True story...I had an old forgotten about IRA that had a few grand in it. It has been sitting as cash for years. Last week I told a coworker to spend it all on SPY. I even told him...”Dude time to short the market. Mock my words...when I buy it’s guaranteed to go down.” He stopped by my desk today and said...”Man I thought you were kidding, too bad I didn’t short it like you said”.

Yep, SPX broke support and then dumped quick, if it continues, next stop ~3075.

It gapped open past the support, that's 2 gaps in this correction now. I would be closing out puts and looking at short term calls on SPX right now if I had that kind of play money. Technicals are starting to look good for either a bounce, or a turn around.

Lamestream media is pushing this into a panic stage and they are loving it. The left is drooling and rejoicing in "tingly leg" syndrome.

Technical analysis is useless during an anomaly/Black Swan event like this.

Differing opinions are what makes the world interesting. cheers

The market moves on fear and greed, regardless of the cause. When the market's over sold, it's over sold.

Where do you see the media pushing the panic button? Are they telling people in the USA to start wearing masks and stockpiling food and gas? Are they telling people to head for the remote hills and avoid contact with people?

Food for thought, especially for anyone that hasn't lived through a crash yet... Don't be surprised to see it drop 20 or even 25 off the high of 29,551 to put it in 1987 or 2008 territory. If it falls 20 percent off the high, look for 23,640 and 25 off will be 22,163. I suspect tomorrow is going to be a memorable Corona or Virus Friday for many riding it out but in the past when that happens, at least in modern times, within a year or so most people were whole. Go enjoy life and don't get caught up in the chaos. Buy low and sell high...

Market performance today looks like capitulation to me, i.e. probably time for me to jump back in. Will see how market reacts Monday morning after a weekend of non-stop virus coverage.

That c word.... OMG

What's the S&P dropped this week, 10%? We had a 20% correction in late part of 2018, so this one is still short of the last major one. Tomorrow will interesting.

If memory serves the dip in fall/winter of 2018 was about 16 %. This one is about 12 %(so far).

The US bear market of 2007–2009 was a 17-month bear market that lasted from October 9, 2007 to March 9, 2009, during the financial crisis of 2007-2009. The S&P 500 lost approximately 50% of its value, but the duration of this bear market was just below average due to extraordinary interventions by governments and central banks to prop up the stock market.

So are you saying just let them die?

I am saying they shouldn’t be here period. If they weren’t here they wouldn’t be going to schools and doctors
Enforce our immigration laws. Funny how Dems say Trump isn’t above the law when Dems themselves don’t follow immigration laws. As far as legal immigrants. We need to be more selective of who comes. If they can’t support themselves and there families we don’t need them

in all respect
you should spend some time with the immigrants from the South
they are really good people
they would much rather live in their homes down South
1 kid from Guatemala
was ordered to kill 2 people, or him & his family would be killed
the Mexican cartels watch the people up here & extort $ from them
while threatening their families in Mexico
the folks i know blame politicians
who belong to the cartels
we have an obligation
to help these people

butch, when they start doing for themselves in their country, then and only then should we consider any help. breaking our law because you are supposedly skeered is not an excuse, not by a mile.
I lived around and worked around illegals for a lot of yrs. they may be the salt of the earth but they still broke our law, no excuse.

But they are Americans, the others came here illegally and took resources that are meant for Americans-
They need to go back and come here like many, many others do legally-
It’s that simple-

Re: Stock market crash predictions - 02/28/20 03:54 PM

Many pay taxes on their earnings, including SS, without any chance of using the services. I think we need a smart worker program that will protect them and us. We would be in trouble without the work force of migrants. I agree, that technology would quickly develop that would help, but not fully. Most are great workers, smart, quick to pick up skills. Watching them lay rebar in the hwy projects makes me realize how much they contribute.
