Jcarring99 2/12 UPDATE!!

As some of you know and some don’t Jcarring99 is my BIL. Joel Carrington is his name. Joel went to have impacted wisdom teeth cut out before Thanksgiving. His oral surgeon shocked him after the surgery and told him he had cancer in his jaw and should see a cancer Dr. immediately. Sure enough he goes and was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in his jaw. He was admitted into the hospital yesterday to have a feeding tube put in. He underwent surgery this morning to remove his jaw. It went well as possible. He will be in ICU the next 3-5 days.

Upon leaving the ICU he will undergo surgery to remove bone from his fibula to reconstruct his jaw with that bone. He is expected to be in the hospital 15-17 days. Joel and his wife have 2 boys a Jr. and Fresh. at Arlington HS. If you’d like to keep up with what’s going on with him you can go to my wife’s Facebook page (Beverly Harkness) and they have something called CaringBridge. A HS friend of his has also set up a GoFundMe page. His dental implants and Pet Scans aren’t covered by insurance. He will be out of work for a while and if you’d like to help feel free to donate. He’s going to kill me for posting this because he’s very secretive and too proud to accept money but he’s going to need it.

Currently with him in ICU. The Dr said initially he’d be in here for 3-5 days but he’s doing so well they’re moving him to a room as soon as one becomes available. Keep those prayers coming, they’re working.

The Dr. said you never know how cancer really starts, only God knows. That was really the answer. But if your asking if he smoked or dipped I think he dipped for about a year about 10-15 years ago.

And talking about it pours when it rains his oldest son had a wreck on his way home from seeing Joel tonight. He’s ok though, keep prayers coming. Thank you fellas.

I’ll answer that. His nurses in ICU looked like they walked off a cover of a beauty magazine. Yes they were HOT!! I got mad when they moved him out of ICU!!!

As he reported he overdid himself yesterday and had a rough day today. I’m going to keep posting to keep this up top in case people want to pray, send good thoughts or help on the go fund me.

more good news and more prayers on the way. I'm clueless about this but if they take bone from a leg won't that make one leg much shorter than the other?

when they did my neck I had a choice of cadaver bone or my own bone, they took some from my hip to fix the discs. they don't cut out a section and use it, I think they take some and use it to get the new started. I had to use a collar to regenerate the bone after surgery, he will probably have similar.

Actually they are going to take my fibula out to use for the reconstruction along with some muscle and skin. As it turns out you can get by with only the Tibia. They put the implants in at the same time Wednesday also

Good plan John! I’m going to try to walk around and sit up as much as I can. I’m sick of the hospital bed already. I won’t be able to move much for the next 5 days or so after surgery tomorrow. I’m ready for it to be over so I can go home sooner. Two weeks or so in the hospital is not my idea of fun!

Well Joel got his pathology report back this morning and they got all the cancer. He then went into surgery around 9:00am and this will be about an 8 hour surgery. They’re taking bone, skin and muscle from his fibula to reconstruct his jaw. I just got back from the hospital and will report back when I go back. Joel’s surgery yesterday to remove bone, skin and muscle from his fibula went well. He was worn out from the surgery as it took 9 hours and may not be answering your texts. Unfortunately my wife has the flu and I didn’t go see him today because he damn sure doesn’t need the flu. Thanks for the PM’s and donations to the Go Fund Me. Joel’s a proud and independent man but I can promise you he really appreciates the donations. Keep the prayers coming. He’s doing as well as expected.

The wife has finally gotten over the flu so I went and saw Joel today but still wore a mask to make sue I didn’t spread any germs. He’s had a tough couple of days and was feeling so bad that he told me my visit lifted his spirits. Haha, if you have a BIL you understand. He’s supposed to get moved out of ICU tomorrow to a room with hopes of being released from the hospital Wednesday or Thursday. He has really appreciated the prayers and texts from you fellas. Keep em coming. And hasn’t had any pain medicine in over 24 hours.

Just got home from the hospital and Joel got some great news while I was there. The Dr. came in and said they were going to redress his bandages tomorrow and release him in the late afternoon. Oh man is it great to be home. That experience was something else at the hospital for over 2 weeks. I had a couple of days of dark moments, but rest assured I was reading the good thoughts and well wishes from everyone and truly appreciate the time you took to post something positive for me. It did lift my spirits and again thank you guys for the well wishes and positive thoughts. I’ve got a lot more recovering to do and chemo and radiation later but for the moment I’m at the best place I’ve seen in a long long time! There’s just something about home

Thanks again everyone. First full day at home has been great so far. I have a new perspective about home and everything in life in general. What I thought were problems were really inconveniences. Things I took for granted before will have a whole new meaning now. That was pure hell for two weeks and will make you think about things a little

Thanks guys! It seems to be getting better everyday. I saw the gout topic and I’ll be damned if mine didn’t flare up a couple of days ago to add insult to injury! That for sure hurts worse than having my fibula bone and jaw removed combined. It’s bad. Luckily the meds kicked in quickly and have no pain now. I’ve lost 20 pounds the hard way and my speech isn’t where I want it to be due to my tongue still being swollen and numbness. Swelling last another 3 weeks or so. The pain in my leg is getting better and better. Just dread the radiation and chemo coming up in about 3 weeks or so. We will see how it goes

I’m feeling better and better each day. Got out of the house Wednesday with the help of coach hark and went to some appointments for work! It felt good getting out of the house and talking to people. We had a couple of appointments with some tff’ers for siding and windows and a porch. I’m able to get around a lot better and I think just getting out and talking to people made me feel better spiritually. I appreciate the good thoughts and continued prayers by you guys. Chemo and radiation start March 10th. Not sure what that looks like just yet but hopefully not as bad as it was in the hospital. I will just be glad when I get the green light to drink water again! I haven’t even had a drink of water since January 27th! I see the surgeon Friday and pray he lets me begin to at least drink water and maybe other things lol

I think he’s still under anesthesia as he’s hired me to work with him. He’s a tough ole SOB but keep prayers coming for him, especially since I’m on his payroll

Thanks BIL, and everyone else. Thank you Dr Bean for reaching out. It’s been a suck fest the last week for sure. Haven’t gotten out of bed other than to go to doctors and treatments. Plus I’ve had a low grade fever the past two days on top of it all. It’s not been all that pleasant but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel in regards to radiation and chemo. Can’t wait until it’s over

Well I’m doing quite possibly the worst since that third and fourth day after my 3rd surgery. My mouth is fried. Literally. I can’t talk, my neck is burned and have scabs and sores from the skin being burned. I’ve been in bed for over two weeks now. I only get out of bed for radiation and chemo. Thank god it’s over next Friday. I can’t wait. I can’t sleep due to pain and thick mucus clogging and waking me up. It is truly way harder than I thought it was going to be. I’m counting the days down until it over. 6 more treatments and I’m done!
