Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:43 PM

No...not that pot.

I have to go to a pot luck dinner this weekend. I know I am expected to bring something...but I have no idea what one takes.
Anyone have experience with these gatherings?

What are things I can bring?

Re: Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:46 PM

Take a tuna casserole . . . . or chicken spaghetti . . . . . or baked squash . . . . .

Re: Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:49 PM

take a couple of packages of dinner rolls.

Re: Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:50 PM

Rolls. Buy a big freezer sack of Sister Schubert dinner rolls. Bake them right before you leave. Most everyone likes hot rolls.

Re: Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:56 PM

Generally a side dish like potato salad, southern style green beans (forego the green bean casserole), deviled eggs, or a dessert like an apple pie.

Re: Pot Luck - 12/09/19 09:58 PM

Pot lucks are like putting a petri dish in your mouth. You have no idea where that food has been. Maybe the bringer has a roach problem, or they sneezed and coughed on it.

Dump several different types of Bush’s baked beans in a dish and bake them. Great for pot luck.

Stop on the way there at the place that has the very best chips, salsa, and queso, buy 5-6 orders. Get enough 2 oz. plastic portion cups for everyone. There won't be any of it left.

Have you considered bringing one of these?

Totally agree with this.

But here are two tried and true that make you all the rage at pot lucks in the future and they are super easy.
You'll need a crock pot for either.

1) Buy you some frozen meat-a-balls from the grocery store. Costco and Sams both have a Raspberry Chipotle sauce this is yummy. Put the frozen meat-a-balls in the crock. Dump some raspberry chipotle sauce on top. Heat and serve. Use cocktail sticks to make it fancy pants.
2) Get you some Li'l smokie weenies and some good bacon. You'll end up cutting the bacon in thirds. Wrap each wiener in a piece of bacon and secure with 1 (or 2) toothpicks. Dump the wieners in the crockpot and cover with brown sugar. Heat 'em up...eat 'em up. NOTE: You may want to skim some grease off the top once they cook.

Bonus tip: You can put the Raspberry Chipotle sauce over a block of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and serve with crackahs. That's some good too.
Bonus tip # 2. If you haven't put your favorite salsa over Philadelphia Cream Cheese...it's a good too.

Bon appetit.

Homemade Mac n cheese was my first thought too, but for simplicity, maybe some pigs in a blanket using little smokies and crescent rolls would be better. Easy to do and always a hit.

Reminds me of last Friday night. Our little group of Friday night diners chose a local restaurant. The three of us who chose the garden salad spent Friday night and Sat. Morn on the throne. The others were fine.

Honestly Fritch doesn't have one either, but it's only 12 miles away in Borger. We do have a Dairy Queen but it is nasty.

Yes, if you are ever driving down I-40 there is a Dairy Queen in Groom that is excellent. Groom is the town with the giant cross. Mostly older women work there and are very conscientious to the quality and the cleanliness of the place. The one in Clarendon wasn't bad either.

This reminds me of a seafood restaurant in Louisiana that had the best made-from-scratch crab cakes in the entire state.

Personally, I read the Health Department audit scores for local establishments. The City web sites often have these or links to them. They are ranked on cleanliness and safe food best practices. Scores are 0-100 and they publish details of the findings. Since they are regulated, there is a better chance cats and dogs aren't wandering around the kitchens, and the folks doing the cooking often understand food saftety. Plus food poisoning cases put a hurt on their income.
