On the awards show he sang and could barely get the words out.
He did not have the lung power to do it.
So sad

He quit cigarettes many years ago but many folks who never even smoked or lived with a smoker develop respiratory problems.'I remember him talking about some type of stem cell treatment he had that greatly improved his breathing 5 to 10 years ago. Maybe something could still be done.

The dude is 86 years old and lived a fast hard life.
I am amazed he is still performing. Supposed to play at the Outlaw and Legends in ABILENE pretty soon.

Heck I’m 30 years younger and run out of breath

Long live Willie. I worked with a lady who has a Czeck last name from West for many years. Willie would stop by the house on TG and sometimes play. She had a picture of him in a recliner picking framed in her office.

He used to stay in good shape. He used to run a few miles a day, even when touring. I know that his lifestyle takes a toll on a person. For sure. I remember back in the 80’s, I first met him playing pickup football in the mud during one of his “picnics”. He was a pretty good runner that day. Ha. Fast forward a few years, and I met him again at one of my mom and stepdads parties. It was in Valley Mills, Tx. My folks were in the night club business. One of there buddies kept saying he was such good friends with Willie. Then, one afternoon, he said he’d call Willie and invite him to come out to a barn party. He flew in in his Cessna to party with my folks and their friends. Me, being a music major at that time, I was “floored”. In the barn was a drum set, old guitars, and some other junk. We talked him into singing a couple songs, while we all took turns trying to play some instrument so we could claim we “jammed with willie”. Later that night, he left. Sober as could be. Didn’t drink a thing but tea and coffee. A few weeks later he was arrested for DUI in Hillsboro or somewhere. The wa the first I’d ever heard he smoked pot. I thought he was as straight as they came.

He’s a really good person. I don’t think he’d ever hurt a soul.
