I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those but if I had to guess it’s something that a door presses against to let you know someone came in your store.

Whatever it is, I hate it, because it requires a flathead screwdriver to remove it. Flatheads are the worst thing ever invented.

Somewhere in the mid to late '70s I went through the house I grew up in and replaced all of those with the 'new' modular ones.

I did that in the early 90s. We still had a party line up until somewhere around when I graduated in 92.

I bet every party line had a Mrs. Jenkins... " I need to use the phone, you need to cut it short and let others make a call"

Too cool. At the farm my grandma and papaw lived on in south Texas it was 2 longs and a short.
I can still hear my papaw hollering at grandma “ 2 longs and a short, Estah, that’s us!”

Brings back some real fond memories of peaceful times listing to the rymthic creaking of the long stroke windmill and mourning doves calling from the mesquite trees. Most relaxing peaceful memories I can think of sitting out on the front porch of that old un-airconditioned farm house.

With the skeleton key door locks, those phone jacks like pictured above, and the woven fabric covered electric cables stapled to the walls for the single bulb electric lights hanging down from the ceiling.

The outhouse was still standing out back from before they got indoor plumbing. And grandmas pressure cooker quail and gravy for Sunday dinners in the fall and winter. I’d give about anything to be able to go back and re-live those days once in a while.

Re: Age test. - 08/20/19 05:04 PM

Yep, remember them well except ours was hard wired. Our phone number was WE5-3913. Then they replaced the WE with 93. Years later we got a 214 area code and later changed to a 903 area code.

I recall being able to just dial last 4 numbers if the other person had the same area prefix (xxx-). At least it was that way in LaGrange about 1972. Also had a party line back then.

Re: Age test. - 08/21/19 12:02 AM

Still remember our number 382-8388 and we were on a four person party line. Funny thing was our home was located less than a 1/2 mile from the Denton radio station transmission towers. Any number of times you could pick up the receiver and listen to the radio broadcast.

Maybe he’ll post to the pot head thread. He has probably posted many times, he just forgot to hit the “post reply” button.
