Cut the onions and add pickles. On top, BTW.

Re: Hamburger question - 07/11/18 07:29 PM
It is more important that the pickles and onions mix properly with the mustard. If that doesn’t happen, the rest of the burger will fall flat.

Re: Hamburger question - 07/11/18 07:39 PM
Here is the priority list for a great burger.
1) Great bun.
2) Well-seasoned meat that is NOT overcooked.
You get those two right and you are going to be okay. Doesn't matter much what else you put on there, or in what order.

Mustard, pickle and onion on the bottom bun.
Meat & cheese
lettuce and tomato on top of the cheese(bacon too if used) then mayo on the top bun.
Anything other than that is wrong!

Not beef. They are growing meat in the factory by hormones in the next few years.
So its eef.

Meat on the bottom or the water from the veggies will soak through the bun. When that happens you have a mess and not a burger

So, next question...
Fingers on bottom, flipping the burger over to take a bite?
Thumbs on bottom, no flipping to take a bite?
or how my wife does it, fingers on bottom, no flipping to take a bite.

Salad belongs in a bowl not on a hamburger. Why ruin the taste of a good burger with rabbit food?
Had a cheeseburger at lunch today and it came with the salad on the bottom. It worked and the meat and bun were excellent, but I like the salad on top. Ditto on the mustard/mayo/ketchup/bbq sauce or whatever. It goes on the top bun.

Agree Biggly!
veges on burgers is just gross...why hide the meat. make a good burger you don't need nothing else. keep eating that fast food garbage and calling it a burger...then ya, you need to hide that taste.

the whole greasy meat on top of everything is weird. If you get it that way at restaurant you cant take anything you don't like off without destroying the burger and getting grease all over. Not to mention I don't like my tomatoes squashed and my lettuce wet.

Cruddy fast food type burgers need that garbage. Good meat should stand alone. Sometimes it's good to try different types of stuff on burgers, and it can be good...most places like Whataburger are the equivalent of well done steak...might as well roll it around in fancy ketchup so you'll have something to taste.
What's your place called?

In a way I see your point. When I make burgers at home I prefer them with cheese only and typically when I order burgers I get them dry with cheese and minimal salad toppings. I love the taste of good meat. With that said I also like the fancy burgers with mushrooms and jalapanoe's, etc....

Southerners for the most part like mustard. Some like ketchup though so I included it. Not sure about Yankees. I’ll have to defer to Don Scagnetti on that. To me ketchup on a burger almost turns it into meatloaf.
My biggest thing is toasted bun and no pickles. That taste combination just ruins the meat. Pickles are good as a stand-alone side only. There is no complimenting a taste with pickled anything, it overpowers the original taste. Onions need to be grilled or sautéed if added to a burger or the texture is ruined.
Never considered the lettuce on bottom as a grease barrier. I am a simpleton though.

There is such a thing as complimenting a burger’s taste with toppings. As long as you don’t go with anything overpowering like pickles, horseradish, bbq sauce, etc. those are the burgers that can’t standalone. I prefer no tomato, but tomatoes aren’t overpowering so they’re allowed. Same with lettuce, cheese, mustard, grilled onions. Lettuce and cheese need to be shredded though. A giant piece of leaf lettuce is just stupid. It’s too thin to add any taste to one particular bite vs shredded, and leaf lettuce will get slimy from the grease and cheese and is kinda just gross. Same with shredded cheese, way more taste in a given bite then a cheese slice that has melted down to a 1/2 millimeter thick.
BTW, Wawi’s place isn’t fast food. He actually has good food there. You should give it a try.

Never once have I ever referred to the "hamburger stuff that I like and add" as a "SALAD."
I might substitute the word "toppings" for the word "stuff," evening if I occasionally put the "toppings" on the "bottom."
...wisdom--don't call it "salad"

This is a burger. It's ground meat. It's ground up because it is tough and gristly and does not have enough flavor to stand on its own. If you are ordering a burger because you want the taste of good quality beef, then you are ordering wrong.
Now if you are grandpa75672 and you have to order your steaks ground up and grilled because your teeth don't work anymore... well then I guess I can see your point.

Re: Hamburger question - 07/12/18 07:32 PM
At ten years old, I knew how to make a hamburger.
Mom would tell the story of on the way to the 1967 Worlds Fair and getting close to crossing over into Canada, we stopped at a roadside dinner. Dad made a remark about this was the last U.S, meal for a while.
Mom said I ordered enchiladas, wait staff asked what is that.
So I ordered a hamburger. Everybody knows how to make hamburgers I thought.
It came out with no vegetables/toppings/salad on it.
Mom said I won't eat it until I got lettuce, tomato and pickles on it (which added to the cost).
Back on the road, Mom said I asked why the people who ran a dinner didn't know anything about fixing food.
See, I know about making hamburgers.
Just put the vegs on it or not and eat the thing.
