These guys were on a tree at my wife’s fire station. She said that they seemed to be eating the bark. I have no idea what they are. Anyone?

Jadera, nymph stage. For the love of God, kill 'em before they become massive adults (the size of a Buick)!

Google say they are beneficial bugs. You might want to read more before destroy them

This is a perfect example of why flame throwers should be more common. If I had one, I am pretty sure I could have a good use for it at least 3-4 times a day.

Yeah, boxelder bug nymphs and a few adults (fully winged) mixed in. Check out http://counties.agrilife.org/galveston/files/2012/03/Boxelder-Bugs-Publ.-E-4531.pdf for more information. After I dropped the link I noticed that the extension bulletin was written by one of my former students. Pretty cool! They are not beneficial insects, they feed on seeds of boxelders and other trees, but are more of a nuisance pest because they aggregate in cracks and crevices during the winter and early spring.

Is that why they call them boxelders?

If they are old when they arrive, then yes box elders.
