Lake Athens bass schooling

Lake Athens bass schooling - 06/17/17 07:41 PM

I started the day fishing up near where I live . . . a small creek channel very identifiable as it has lily pads on each side of it marking it off well. Gosh, just with my ultralight gear, I caught half a dozen bluegills, a couple of crappie, and I think 3 bass. I was sitting on close to a dozen caught fish before I lost sight of my boat dock. That set-up is great for a morning bite, afternoon late, too.

Well, up on the north and west side of the 2495 bridge, there is that big open area and when I pedaled through it, the bass began jumping all around me chasing bait fish. I caught my best bass of the day throwing into one of those boils.

If you fish Athens soon, be sure and have one rod ready to toss an appropriate lure into those boils.

And, the same thing on the other side of the bridge. Several boats just stayed right there near the ramp. Fish were boiling up all over. All the boats were doing very well. I saw several doubles. It almost looked like a white bass situation.

I went on up and caught more bluegills at my favorite location, found a great place for crappie fishing and caught 3 or 4 of them, then another 3 or 4 bass.

I guess two dozen or thereabouts for my total account across 3 species.

Less action floating back home around 1 PM with a wind that had picked up a bit.

Bug-e,

Carrying along an ultralight is almost 100% insurance that you'll catch some fish, that is for sure.

I had a spy bait lure that I just bought . . . at home. I wish I had that with me to toss into some of those schools.

I'll take it out next time!

Athens is one of the most beautiful lakes in east Texas to me. Fished it a few times four years ago and only once or twice a year since. May try to get back over there Tuesday or Wednesday if anyone is interested.
