Need help picking the right kayak for creek fishing - 03/01/15 03:44 PM
I am in the market for a kayak to use in the creeks for white bass in the spring. I dont know anything about them and need to know what to get and what to stay away from. Sit in or sit on top? And anything else about them.
I want a good kayak but dont want to spend over 400-500$ if possible.
Thanks

How big a boy are ya? How big are these creeks?
The pescador 12 is a good boat for the money. There's a OK prowler 13 for sale in the classifieds also.

Recommend a used 12' sit on top, that's pretty standard for almost any water. There's a wide range of brands & some that have more fishing specific features than others. The type of seat is a huge factor in your experience-more & more "lawn chair" style seats & they make a huge difference. Bass Pro has a good option w/ a raised seat for the lowest $.
Most everyone will recommend a test ride/paddle to see what you like best.

150 pounds? You have a wide selection. I'm 170 and my pelican apex 100 angler holds me just fine.

By your signature you seem to be a serious big cat hunter so since you are hunting pretty good sized cats, and probably using a lot of lines with a lot of hooks, you might want to look at one of these for your type of fishing.

The bass pro Ascend FS10 is a great river/creek yak. Light weight and comfortable chair and very stable for a sit in. Plus they are a dry ride. Just my .02 oh and the one I have (still have it!) carried my 6'3" 245lb frame just fine.

I don't know why Malibu Kayaks do not get much love on this forum, but a mini-X is great for creeks and rivers. Wide, but very stable for beginners.

2nd the BPS Ascend FS10. Very stable & in your price range.
The seat ! The Seat ! is really great. I use mine in creeks
for the sandbass run. The 2015 model has some nice improvements.
I added (2) forward cleats to hold (2) sets of anchor rope.
Something to think about: I don't plan on adding rod holders
and an array of gadgets to the front dash of my yak. Fishing
in small creeks, I anchor pointing into the current, and cast
forward into the current. I just don't need obstacles to have to
cast over & around.

Mini-X agreed. the mini x was the first yak I ever bought and I still use it for creeks and short lake trips. very stable
