Catching A DINOSAUR Alligator Gar From Kayak - 07/20/14 09:26 PM

Catching an alligator gar near 100 pounds on the trinity river near crockett Tx from my 9 foot malibu mini x kayak. i was using cut carp for bait, the rod/reel used was a shimano trevalla jigging rod rated for up to 200# braid with a shimano tyrnos 16 loaded with 100# braid. the fish swam away healthy to fight another day, alligator gar are some of the oldest fish on the planet with fossils records showing them living during the cretaceous period..the Trinity river is a crazy environment i have fallen in love with i will be making another trip soon.

found this big catfish with a bite taken out of it, as i took this pic i look over and see a 8 foot gar 5 feet from the kayak at the surface looking at me..ended up hooking it for about a minute..

Curious as to where you put in close to Crockett. If hwy 7, you're more dedicated than I. Boat ramp on hwy 21? Private access?

Missing Two Hookups on Big Trinity river gar, the first fish i hooked in the same spot i saw a monster gar right next to a 15 pound catfish with a bite taken out of it..i fished the spot for 2 hours and hooked a big gar for about 50 seconds..the seconds gar i tried to hook while anchored so i wouldn't get nervous ending up right on top of it..didn't work out this time, but im planning another trinity river trip soon maybe this weekend..hopefully the water will be lower by then.

You know they are there. Good luck with the ling and the 'gator gar. I won't be able to make this year's BWKC. Bummed about that, but I'll be rooting for all of you to have a safe, fishy and fun event.
