KATS Bastrop

KATS Bastrop - 03/02/14 03:44 AM

G.A Gonzalez and I hit the KATS event at Lake Bastrop today. The sky was overcast with a steady south wind and a VERY good morning bite. Guillermo and I were both culling with-in the first hour of the day we just couldn't manage to upgrade those "pesky" 17"rs.

If you have never been to Lake Bastrop do yourself a favor and GO! It is an incredible fishery! Neither me or Guillermo had been to the lake previously and we both caught 90" today! Congrats to the winners: Bobby Lebeuf 98", Ryan Herzog 97+", and Steve Garcia 94+"(Maybe you've heard of these guys cheers ) Herzog got Big Bass 22.75"

Matt that's awesome. You and Guillermo showed up to a lake you'd never fished before and busted a very respectable 90 inches... Finishing behind those guys is nothing to be ashamed of cause they're damn good. But what a lake, huh? Do those dudes know how good they have it to fish lakes like that for their tourneys? wink

Congrats to you guys. Tell Guillermo I didn't mean to be a dick at the weigh in, just filling him in on the rules. He and I pretty much fished together most of the day and he was getting them pretty good right from the start. And yes, we know how spoiled we are, every time we try to go up north and get skunked.

Glad y'all made it down. Always a good time for sure. So what did y'all think of Bastrop compared to some of the water bodies y'all have up there?

Nice job & report, that's a nice stringer on any lake.

Nice man! Good job on a nice stringer. Those top 3 are just a reminder that luck has nothing to do with it. They're always in a position to win. I've seen Herzog get 2nd in 3 tournaments since December. That has to be a bittersweet feeling, haha. The dude is consistently good though. I met Bobby at KATS on LBL, he's a cool dude too.

I don't know if we have any lakes up here that really compare to what I saw at Bastrop Ryan. That lake might be the ultimate kayak tournament lake as far as I'm concerned. It has the numbers and size of fish you need, lots of fishable water, and it's just about the perfect size not to feel too cramped by other anglers. We have some great lakes up here but they just don't hold the numbers of fish I saw down at Bastrop. I caught 30 fish and 90.5" just junk fishing not really having a game plan, I don't think you could do that at very many north Texas lakes. If I had to list the best lakes right now for a kayak tournament up here they would probably be, Amon Carter, Monticello, Squaw Creek, and Crockett.

I'm fishing Bastrop for the first time this Saturday. I'm not asking for any secret lures but what are some productive patterns/colors on the lake. I'm fishing with my dad who guides on it, so he already has an advantage. We are pretty competitive when it comes to fishing and I might not get much help from him.

The tournament was won throwing frogs in the reeds.

i won social class throwing brown/purple culprit hawg fishing on top of the weeds along the bank and in reeds. caught a few on arashi square bill in red as well. to be honest from 7-9am on sat. i felt like i could have thrown any soft plastic on the weeds and got blowups. it was an awesome morning for me. good luck!
