Kayak sails - 09/10/13 05:29 PM

I'm interested in trying a sail out on my PA. Anyone do that on their fishing kayak (especially a PA)? Looking at these...

Why spend extra money on a generic sail kit when you can get a Hobie sail kit ready to immediately rock and roll for considerably less dollars? The Hobie kit comes complete with sail. mast, main sheet line and assembles in less than a minute into the mast mount is already built in to your PA.

You may already know, but, none of the add-on sails will actually tack into the wind. The fins on the Hobie Mirage drive unit do not have sufficient resistance to the wind to act as a centerboard. Regardless, the sails are a lot of fun for downwind and across the wind drifting.

Don't forget to go get your TX numbers when you do this!

I've considered the Hobbie sail, Mike. Falcon has a lot of videos that show they can be used upwind on kayaks without a center board or Mirage fin acting as such. So I'm interested in the Falcon product solely for that reason. It's not a typical kayak sail design.

Going downwind is never a problem. Upwind is the issue.....and for some reason is always in the direction of the ramp.

I have a windpaddle sail and hobie factory sail and I've used them both on my Outback. The wind paddle works better than I expected and can even be used to reach somewhat. The factory sail works a lot better and it reaches very well. I can tack in light winds. I don't believe that any sail is going to turn a kayak into a sailboat. Without a daggerboard you'll probably end up turtling.
