Buying a kayak

Well I decided instead of building my boat I will buy a kayak my price limit is 200- 250. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions were to look or maybe someone has their starter kayak for sell around that price?

Don't know. You might try craigslist. On dallas craigslist there is a Cobra Explorer Kayak that would be a fair starter yak but it's more than your budget. He wants $425 for it but told me he'd take $400 If it don't sell in a few weeks he may take less who knows?

I've actually found a few close to my price range but its a gonna be a couple hour drive buts thats fine i dont mind driving a bit!also i found one by my house for 350 its a 10 ft. Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100 Sit-in Kayak it doesnt look like its set up for any fishing though so i think ill prob pass on it

The Pamlico is a good boat. Not that difficult to set up yourself and then you can put things where you want them, not where someone else did.

I'd think long and hard on the Pamlico if you're ok with a sit inside for fishing. I have a SOT and a SINK and like them both but.... A lot of folks have a strong preference for one over the other. Also factor the cost in gas into your budget and the prices may be closer than you think. That Pamlico is a lot of boat for $350. I don't own one but have paddled one, they are nice.

Thanks for your input. Truthfully it will be my first yak so im not to sure which preference I'll have but there is only one way to find out!! And a plus side is I can always resale if I hate it lol but I've had a 12 foot Jon boat and that was no Fun going out alone!!! So I'm guessing if I can get the pamlico for under 350 I'm doing decent?

Sell the jon boat and up your budget.

Lol I actually already sold it a few months ago.. But If I wait another month I can maybe add another 100 bucks to my budget.. Ooo the joys of being underemployed... But a job is a job...

Haha well I decided the heritage angler 10 will be the one bc I took a nap and had a dream I sunk so sit on top ftw!!! I def will be eating cheap this month tho.

I suggest you dont rush into something. Usually when you do that you wont be happy and will lose your butt if you try to sell and upgrade. Rat hole some more cash while you are test driving different yaks and deciding what is best for you.

From what I've looked at and in my price range it is rigged the best to suit me from everything I've seen the only other yak I think I might like would be the cobra explorer on craigslist but it has no rod holders..

im a float tuber, im switching to a yak this week or next, im thinking of getting the Jackson Coosa! So far as ive seen its the top of the line for angling, any thoughts?

@ jakethesnake: Don't worry so much about rod holders and other bolts ons. Flush mount holders run about $12 and Scotty rod holders run about $22 bucks. Most guys prefer to buy a naked yak and add accessories when and where they want. I would agree wholeheartedly with D.D.R. and encourage you to save money while you do some test drives. When you get into the $400-$500 used range, you jump up a notch in design and reliability.

Also, the cheaper yaks tend to be the smaller yaks (less plastic, less money), which, depending on your size, can be an issue. I'm 6'6" and 275 lbs. I cannot fit in 99% of the yaks under 14 feet. When looking at a yak, take 2/3s of the listed capacity to find its performance capacity. For instance, the Pamlico 100 has a listed capacity of 300lbs and a performance capacity of 200lbs. This is important because manufacturers severely over-inflate their capacities. If you put 300lbs in that Pamlico 100, the yak will nearly be completely under water, making the yak very tippy, much slower, and not very maneuverable. Don't forget to factor in your gear weight. Some guys take one rod and a small Plano box, while other take the kitchen sink.

If you're doing larger rivers (Colorado, Guadalupe downstream of New Braunfels), lakes, or bays, you'll enjoy something with a little more hull speed and tracking.
