What's Your Favorite Frog Rod?

What's Your Favorite Frog Rod? - 05/31/22 03:31 PM

I am committing more to fishing a frog I want to get a frogging rod. The short MH rod I've been using is stiffer than all the other MH rods I have and casting with it is awesome, but I need more backbone. I had a big one come off close to the kayak this weekend and I think it was because I didn't get a good hookset in the thick grass. I caught 5 decent fish in the same area on the same setup and all were hooked good. I did everything by the book, but when I set the hook on this one, it felt a little "mushy" I guess is the best way to describe it and I felt the rod flex at the reel seat in my left hand.

What is your favorite frog rod you use out of a kayak?
My main concerns are: 1- Enough backbone with a soft enough tip to still make good casts. 2- Lightweight. 3- Average to shorter butt section so it's still comfortable to use with a PFD on. 4- Around $200.

Falcon Heavy Cajun Baby rod--now discontinued. Falcon do a good job of balancing backbone and tip softness for throwing frogs. I really like the Cajun Baby out of a kayak due to its shorter length.

In their current line up, I'd get the Falcon Lowrider Head Turner LFC-610H

I prefer using a MH 7-7’3” length. However, sometimes conditions call for my 7’ heavy rod. Mine is a TFO and it’s got the flex of a broomstick, so it’s actually more of a pain not to miss the hook set, but a blessing when it comes to horsing a decent bass out of the slop. Still, I’ve never broken a MH rod and it’s more versatile for everything than the heavy.

In my opinion... if you want a dedicated frog rod for fishing in the real slop, you are best served with a 6-0 to 6-6 heavy /medium or fast action. Pair it with an 8/1 reel and 60-pound braid.

You will only use this for frogs and for punching the real nasty stuff, which is why I no longer string it up. I find that a 6'-6" to 7' MH fast action rod will suffice for frogging and will be more versatile if the frog bite is not happening.

Just my two cents from an old-school guy who learned to fish in the mid-west.

With frogs, you really have to wait to set the hook. Most don't have the patience to fish one properly.

Agree... I'd rather have a rod I can do several things with versus a dedicated rod of any kind in a kayak.

I agree. I got lucky and my dad started teaching me how to use different top water baits pretty early on. I struggled with waiting at first, but got it down eventually. I still jump sometimes but wait to lay into them until I feel a pull.

This one knocked a little slack in my line at first, but I felt it pull tension pretty hard right after.

I like the Irod Genesis lll rods. The Harold Lonestar Special. 6'9" M/H action. The key to me is the handle length. This rod has a 14" handle and really allows the movement needed to work a frog

I currently use a Falcon Lowrider Hvy Cover Jig and it works just fine for me.

Haha. I bought this exact rod last week and tried it out this weekend. I tried it out this weekend at my dad's little farm pond. I really like it so far.

A lot depends on the type of vegetation and how dense...

I prefer the light rod I can get away with for conditions/fish size as easier to work the frog with softer tip
