Hardware to mount rod holder

Hardware to mount rod holder - 06/16/21 12:36 AM

So Im trying to mount two rod holders behind my seat of my hobie outback and I cant reach it from the inside. I fish for catfish mainly so would y’all recommend using the spider type of rivnuts or use well nuts? Im mainly looking for which would be stronger just from the tension some of these cats put on a rod. Thanks

For catfish I would not even think about anything other than a backing plate if you can't reach it from the inside to put washers and nuts. Scotty makes one that I believe also fits Railblaza. https://www.amazon.com/Scotty-441-Backing-Plate/dp/B00PCIA5CS

Ram also has a backing plate. Or you can make your own if you have the tools to cut a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum and to thread the holes.

Here's a video on how to get the backing plate in position to install.

Thats a great idea! The only thing Im worried about is my rudder cable runs right thru there so will have to watch out for that

Hears another tip- when you drop your string or line into the drilled hole to begin the "fishing" process use the biggest nail to your line that will fit through your drilled hole. Get a pretty strong magnet and run along the outside of the kayak. The magnet will pick the nail up while it's inside the hull and you can run the magnet along the lower or even bottom side of the kayak to your hatch that way it avoids cables, etc.

Here's a link to an illustration on what I'm talking about. This is for rudder tubes not fishing a backing plate but same concept will work. https://www.vikingkayaks.co.nz/kayaking+info/how+to/rudder+cable+tubes+fitting

In some cases you can hang a heavy weight to the cable to pull it down and out of the way during your install. I used a trailer hitch ball and a small piece of copper wire to make a hook. Reduce the tension as much as possible and then hook it where you can and push it toward your work area. Tie a string to it for easy retrieval after the install.

Also, the method that Jerry suggested works great. Keep an awl or nail handy to line up the backplate once you pull it into position.

Good luck!
