Anyone fish Calaveras? I just got a new to me Kayak and live near the lake. I used to fish the lake alot, with a boat but having to learn to refish the lake with the kayak.
I see alot of kayaks on the lake, just wondering how many are on TFF.

There is a kayak launch (beach) next to the dam as you turn left after you enter the lake.
You need a cast net and you can catch bait there such as shad and talapia right there at daybreak being the best.
Fish along the rip rap of the dam for cats, and troll in front of the dam for reds.
If you paddle all the way across there is the old telephone pole in the water and the old road bed and a couple small coves, and then 181 cove the one where they pump the water in.
That is directly across in front of the dam to the other side and at a steady pace paddling you can make it across in around twenty minutes, but coming back against a stiff wind, it will take quite a bit longer.
It's a popular area for kayakers as well as the guides and boat fishermen, so it can get crowded, but they are following the fish.
Best to pay attention to the wind especially any front's this time of year as it could be dangerous if caught by surprise.
Staying close to the dam rather than crossing open water is more for safety especially on a weekend, and you are protected from prevailing S, SE winds. North wind is almost impossible to stay out of the wind on that lake.
People out there don't pay attention to kayaks from what I've learned, so if you hear a boat keep your head on a swivel. I've learned that having an airhorn is a handy tool to have!

You should always wear your PFD! Kayaks are great to fish out of, but you can end up in the water in the blink of an eye, so a practice session in shallow water getting back in after flipping is recommended. Pliers, and other tools should have floats attached, and rods and reels either floats or lanyards are a necessity, and a dry box that floats for your cell phone and keys.
