serious question about the brazos

serious question about the brazos - 04/30/18 05:34 AM

We are wanting to do a trip this weekend. Either the 10 mile trip from Rochelles or the 8 mile trip from whitney to dicks. What trip is better. It will be me and my 27yr old daughter and 8yr old granddaughter. I hear about the water release they do at whitney. But does it get dangerous when they do and you are like halfway down? And I've never done the 10 mile trip from Rochelle. Thank you for any tips and advice.

I've done the trip form whitney to dicks, for me its a good day trip, and when they let water out when you are several miles downstream it didn't seem dangerous, just faster water, but I never did it with youngsters.
The 10 mile at Rochelles I've never done, although I've done the trip from to dam to Rochells many times.
The one at rochells you wont be getting any water level surprises though. (Less likely)
You were not planning on overnight camping during this paddle right?
That would change my response-

I personally would not take inexperienced paddlers and a youngster below Whitney if they are generating. Right now the flow is between 50 and 60 cubic feet per second. When it's generating it is 5000 CFS. That makes the water line go up into the trees on the banks in some areas and turns a stretch you would have to drag over into a class 2 or 3 rapid. Not horrible but it turns a nice relaxing slow day on the water into a fast paced better be alert and repaired for anything trip. That being said they have not generated a good while but that all depends on the power grid needs. No schedule to it so if its really hot the day when you go they could open it up.

I have not done the 10 trip at Rochelles but knowing the river above pretty good I'm sure that would be a nice relaxing trip.

I've done the 10 miles below Rochelle's countless times. It's a very relaxing paddle. There are some short stretches that may take a little effort if you are going into a stiff headwind, but it's not bad. I took by buddy and his 4 yr old in a canoe a while back, and I was the only one paddling the whole time. The flow was at 80 cfs, and there were only a few shallow spots that we can to get out and walk the canoe.

Numerous places to camp, and fishing is good.
