Float tubes

Hi there, looking at getting a float tube. I've read some of the threads already, just wondering if there is a particular starter float tube or things to look for, must haves over nice to have but not necessary.

For someone just starting, a generous return policy would be the first thing to look for, which probably means Walmart, or a few others that have a 3-month return policy. That allows you to try at least a few different ones without being stuck with something you don't like, and then you can shop for the best price or look for a much cheaper used one once you find something you like. Usually the butt tubes which have you sitting on top of a cushion of air are the most comfortable, the most easy to propel, and can carry larger Riders and more equipment, plus they keep you warmer by sitting mostly out of cold water, especially without waders.

Go the the Caddis webpage. They have tubes with cosmetic blem for less than $100. Those are what I use. Fishing out of a float tube takes a little getting used to but once you get it figured out you can fish water nobody else can get to. This is my tube and it is one of the blem tubes.


It has good sized compartments on each side for gear. I have added a rod holder and also have a small battery powered fish finder on the side opposite of the rod holder but that isn't in the picture. There is a heavy duty mesh bag on the right hand side that I put fish in. I grew up in CO and lots of people fish out of tubes in the high mountain lakes but you don't see many down here but they are very effective.

This will be my first one. We have several tanks at the ranch that these would be perfect. Went back and ordered a second for my daughter so she can join me.

Using a drill motor, With feet up / no fins, (as shown starting at the beginning) it's possible to use a float tube in very shallow water, down to 4 inches or so..
