Lake Houston - 12/21/13 - 12/23/13 02:13 PM
Some days it just all comes together. Braved the weather Saturday and decided to go to Lake Houston for a short trip. When I got there it was warm and rainy. As I was launching, I saw a boat fishing a flat and saw them catch a couple. Once I was in the water they were headed in complaining of a tough day.
I went about 100 yards passed them and started back. Caught a couple here and there. I was throwing traps, SK 1.5, and Shakey Head. Once I reached the flat I started getting bit pretty consistently. Then all of it changed. The wind changed directions and started howling and the rain came down hard. Lightening forced me to sit in the truck for about 30-45 minutes.
Once it passed I headed out again. I have a particular area that I have caught some huge bass so I headed there. Shad were popping the surface and I foul hooked 2 so I knew I was in the right spot. As I pulled up on my spot I smiled!! It looked like catfish being fed in a pond. I started with the trap. I caught 20-30 fish just on the trap. At one point I caught 13 on 13 casts.
Once the trap bite died it was the 1.5 where I took about 5 more. When that died I grabbed the drop shot. First 8 casts yielded 8 fish. I sat there for another 30 minutes and caught 10-12 more.
Left there as it was getting late and when to an identical spot and nailed 4 more in about 10 casts. It was getting really late so I headed back to the ramp. When I got there I looked at where I started and the bass were just destroying shad. I launched the trap as far and as fast as I could and caught 8 I think before I called it a day.
Not much on size. Did catch a lot of 14-16" fish and quite a few smaller ones but when they are hitting like that it's just plain ole fun! What a great day.
