Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/20/12 03:47 AM

From the way it has been rising today, I am sure that we will be about 3-3.5 ft low within the next day or so. Maybe better than that. Looking pretty good so far. May try to put the deck boat in on Tuesday and see what the cats are like. Hopefully they will be biting. Gonna try the shallow areas. Figure with all the new vegetation now, they should be feeding pretty good in those areas. Everyone be safe.......

Here's the page I use to look at Somerville. Directly from the Corps of Engineers. Gives you hour by hour levels.

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/20/12 04:46 PM

Looks like my prediciton may have been a little off. If it keeps going at this rate (about 7 inches in 1 day) then it may be less than 3 feet low by tomorrow. I know it will start slowing down (probably today) but hopefully it will get close to pool level before its all over (hopefully the corps wont start releasing water till we are at pool). Headed out in a bit to take a look around at the creeks and the lake to see where its at. Maybe it will be up to the rocks on the dam. Been living here since 91 (actually off and on sing mid 80's)and never been out to Newman's bottom. May try and find it today to look around. Live in Deanville. HL&S, great video's by the way...everyone be safe.....

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/21/12 02:21 AM

Well, got to ride around for a while and check things out.
Yegua is running hard !!! Did not get to Nails creek but the one that cross under 1948 over by Somerville is barely running now but feeders are still dumping water in. Newman's Bottom gate was closed so I could not get down there. Welch park has no beach left. Its all water now. Overlook area still needs water to get some of the boats floating but looks a heck of a lot better than it did a month ago. Hopefully we will get more hard rain in the next couple of weeks and that should put us up to where we need to be. Have fun guys, and be safe....

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/21/12 03:41 AM

I visited Nails creek park Monday afternoon and the lake is almost high enough to get into the creeks by kayak or canoe. At the rate it's rising should be good to go with flat bottoms and other shallow running motor boats by next week. Nails, Cedar, Birch and Jerdelle creeks are all receding and will be bank fish-able but slippery by the weekend if not sooner. Reports are beginning to trickle in from some of the guys on TFF and beyond.. Lots of downed timber in the creeks so bring extra lures and be prepared to lose a few.. Jerdelle clears up first but my trip up Monday afternoon makes me think there ain't much in there yet.. Cedar, Nails and the Yegua are almost a sure bet.. wink

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/21/12 02:08 PM

Guess I was pretty close to the prediction....Now only 3.5 ft. low. Was really hoping it would make the 3ft low mark but oh well. Just glad we got what we did. Hope it continues. Gonna take the deck boat out in a bit and see if the cats are hitting. Hopefully we can box a few. Will let you know.

Yegua is still flooded so the lake will continue to rise smile

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/21/12 10:22 PM

Great Video HL&S
We did manage to get the deck boat out today for a few hours. Fishing was really slow. Fished the shallows and nothing so we started fishing the channel we always fish. Bite was very very light. The wind picked up a little and we had to hold the rods. Could not tell if there was a bite or the wind moving the rod tip. That was how light the bite was. We only boxed 6 and they were about 2 lbs or a little better each. Just right for the fish fry tomorrow. It will get better as we go though and we all know that. Wardens were out checking boats today. I did not get checked but a few of the guys coming in told me they had been checked. I imagine that they will be out in force for a while which is ok with me. If you are legal it doesn't matter anyway. See ya on the water and be safe......

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/22/12 12:44 AM

Lake Somerville is on the rise and should be near normal pool level by the weekend. The whitebass started moving into the Yegua sometime before the big rains last week and are making their way upstream. The Yegua is still flooded but by Thursday, March 1, it should be back down enough to kayak up it from Nails creek state park. I suspect the water will be muddy and the fishing tough but you can never tell until you try...

I need to do some recon for the Texas paddle trail and the state park in preparation for a video I'm producing. So if you want to be in one of my FishTale videos here's your chance..

I will be leading a group up the creek leaving at 10am from the Nails creek state park boat ramp. Join me if you want but the ship leaves port @ 10:15AM sharp...

A good bit of kayaking experience is necessary to do this paddle fully and safely. I assume no responsibility for the actions of others or their safety, rednecks included, we are just gonna play follow the leader up the Yegua... Keep up or be left behind..and remember

I ain't your daddy so buck up and paddle hard!

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/24/12 05:19 PM

Hope to see ya'll Saturday on the creek.. I'm taking several guys with me and will be having lunch at the pavilion in Nails Creek Park around noon. Everyone is invited to sit and talk fishy. I have no idea how many will show up but I'll have my crew with me grillin' up chile dogs and talkin smack as we always do..

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 02/24/12 11:46 PM

Reports have been coming in all day of whitebass being caught by the dozens up and down all the creeks at the upper end of Lake Somerville.

Like these from Cedar Creek Friday morning 2-24-12.

My son and I are going out in the morning. Any suggestions on location and lures? Don't give away too many secrets but my 14 yr. old is dying to hook up on a bunch of fish.

Can't really help on location, feeder creeks are great anywhere this time of year. White rooster tail is usually my go to bait.

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 03/12/12 02:25 AM

Blues is correct and we are all hoping that this latest rain will bring another wave of fish up the creeks and get the lake closer to pool level... maybe sometime early this week!

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 03/12/12 12:33 PM

I'll almost make a wager that we will be at pool level by midnight tomorrow night. Came up a foot in one day and less than a foot low now. Be glad when it settles down. Fishing has already improved so much. Headed out on Sunday.
The kid and I were out a week ago and put 25 cats in the boat. They were not in one of my regular holes over by Deer Island though. Really surprised me. Had to fish deeper and around Snake Island to get them. What really surprised me was not a single bait fish in their bellies. Some had roe in them but not a single shad or minnow in the belly.
This wave of warm weather should turn them on pretty good (hopefully). Good fishing and be safe.

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 03/12/12 02:23 PM

I expect the whitebass creek fishing to peak over the next two weeks and then descend quickly like normal ending by early April. But the crappie creek fishing could be good until May and in the Yegua many fish never leave the lower end making for some good fishing all year!... That's where you will find me after all the bank fishermen head to the house!

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 03/13/12 05:17 PM

What is the water clarity and temp? I'm looking to do a little sight fishing this weekend and I'm trying to decide which lake to hit.

Posted By: Texashorseman

Re: Somerville Lake Levels - 03/13/12 11:09 PM

Not sure....have not been out since last week. Clarity was not to bad in the shallows but not sure of the temp. Week before it was only 55 degrees

Showing to be 1.12 feet high! Amazing to think that at the beginning of the year she was 10' low!
