Decker 12/17

Decker 12/17 - 12/17/20 07:48 PM

They are pumping in water, but it's still really low. Maybe it's up a foot, but the ramp is still nearly out of the water. Speaking of water it smelled like a dang construction site rent a can. P-YEW!!! No real fishing report except they were not shallow or deep or in between. They did not want shad crank, crawfish crank, green swim bait, white swim jig, 10" tequila sunrise ribbon tail, shad drop shot....you get the idea. The only thing I even got picked up with was dark green baby brush hog in about 3', but I never got a hook set. The two times I got picked up they grabbed the tail and moved it, never accepted the hook.

Talked with a COA guy at the ramp, asked what they were up to. he said water testing. I said "Yep, that's water!" which got a laugh. I asked him how was the water quality and he said one word and I quote..."TERRIBLE". I felt like saying well no $#!+ when you let the lake nearly dry up and there is no rain to replenish it the quality is gonna suck.

Anyway, no fish for the old Army green Skeeter today.

(I knew I shoulda gone ahead and went to Fayette while there wasn't much wind!)

First time I've seen power plant in operation in a long time.

Thanks for the report! I'm hoping to get out there over the holidays and had no idea the lake was that low. I want to see if the crappie bite is still any good out there, haven't been on Decker since 2017. Hoping the water will be up enough to launch a 22ft bay boat by Xmas. Is the water quality bad enough that you want to avoid eating fish out of there right now?

I remember driving up one of the feeder creeks 3 or 4 years ago and encountering orange water flowing into the lake. Not a little orange but almost fluorescent orange. Scary.

Oh hell! I’ve caught a couple of hybrids out there that didn’t quite look right when compared to the hybrids out of Belton. They were super skinny and had a yellowish tint to the filets, I put those in the scrap bucket! I may just head to granger instead.

As fivebites said I'd steer clear of eating anything our of Decker at the moment. They do have some BIG crappie in there, pulled a 2#er out a few years ago on accident. Hey got in the way of the 12# LMB that was about to devour my crank bait grin

Anyway, no chance I'd eat anything out of there at this point.

LiebersDad, sorry you didn’t get bit. Would sure like to see that damn lake full of water again. Think I’ll hit Stillhouse next week one day and see how it fishes, I’ve never fished it.

There's an old road bed coming off the south shore (use to be a line of trees on either side showing it clearly) that was great. Up river was good too. Around the island on the deep water side use to produce well.

If you happen to catch a trolling motor on about 35' Its mine. long story

Thanks for the info. Almost afraid to know about the trolling motor, haha

lets just say 3' swells, heavy rain, hail, and tornados in the area. im upriver and my trailer is at the marina.
mad dash across the lake to get to safety, didnt latch the troller down properly. entire platform ripped off the front of the boat when it dropped in while on plane. all i wanted was to get to safety. didnt even care.

Oh damn, that sucks, could of happened to most of us I’m sure. I was on Falcon a few years ago in the same scenario, would of been easy to pop the troller out of the water and make a dash for safety without strapping it down.

I think you can launch out there now. Looks like it's up enough that I'm gonna bring the Ranger next trip out there.

Thanks Doc. I'm in the middle of selling my current boat (sold but waiting for final funding) and buying a newer one after the 1st, so I'm out of a boat for a week or two. Let us know how it works out with the Ranger!
