Choke 2-16-19

Choke 2-16-19 - 02/17/19 06:34 PM

Water temp 56-61
clarity- clear to 3ft
overcast all day with wind 10-15mph

My first time on the lake (scouting for sapd big bass event in 2 weeks) since the new water came in and I think I spent to much time up shallow instead of the transition areas out a lil deeper. Most the creeks and coves are full of grass and brush which makes it dang near impossible to drag the bottom looking for those fish set up doing their thing.

Threw a shallow diving crankbait and spinnerbait/chattebait over the tops of that stuff hoping to get bit that way but no go. Graphed some fish out deep on some ledges but couldn't get them to bite. I was trying to target some other rockier shallow banks and points that I knew had hard bottoms but didnt have all of the brush on it which was hit or miss..

Pics of the south Shore ramp and areas I was targeting

I’ve thought about fishing that tourney, the run I’d have to make to win would be brutal. I’m not sure anyone else would be dumb enough to make it either.

Ya I know! I wanted to target the greyhound area but there is no way in heck I was gonna do it!

My brother fished the Nueces river below three rivers last week and he said the current was running really strong.
Makes me wonder where that current is coming from since it's been a while since we had some heavy rains, and it makes me think they are letting it out of Choke to be running that strong.
If so, the lake level may not be where it is now in two weeks.

Check back in a couple of weeks and see if it's still holding steady.

I think they all grew legs and walked off.

Or maybe wings and flew away, just doesn’t make any sense to be fishing so badly.

Haven’t been on Choke in awhile, bet with so much flooded brush from the last bit of rain they have moved up in the hard to get to areas. Especially across the way from Masons Point. Water was way down the last time there and it was so time consuming getting around East of Calliham it was just easier to fish west towards Damm.

With all the new cover, and if the water level can be stable, then there should be a good spawn, and an explosion of baitfish this spring, and some good fishing ahead.

A potential Bass Mecca lake, and getting little pressure. U'd think it would be on fire. I'm waiting for this lake to turn on again

Just put it together Will. Been following your youtube videos for awhile, keep up the good work. Actually finally watched your show “how not to fish” today, believe it was this trip. Anyway, good work!

They usually only post after they have stocked. Here is history. https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/action/stock_bywater.php?WB_code=0164

Looks like SAPD big bass had some decent sized fish caught, they caught bigger ones than I expected them too. Results on the SAPD BASSBUSTERS website. 7lb something was the big bass.

Ya some of buddies went down and struggled along with others after I told them how tough it was. I'm glad someone found a good one to win though!
