Canyon

Canyon - 03/08/18 11:02 PM

Back on Canyon for the first time this year. Had a couple of hours to kill so I just fished off the bank. Caught two bass, one about 3 the other 3+. After hooking the first one I noticed the other bigger fish trying to take the crank bait away. I threw back, and a few casts later caught the second bigger one. Both fish ate (choked it) a green crawfish crank bait, in about 4-6 feet on a main lake point close to spawning coves.
Fish Tight,
JP
Both fish were full of eggs, one had a green crawfish about an inch long and what looked like a Gobi? in it's stomach.
If someone can post a pic, I'll send it to you. Been fishing for 40+ years and have seen 1 or 2 of these little fish in a bass' stomach, none of my fishing buddies know what it is either.

We were on Canyon yesterday also. Mainly fished around the big submergedmount northwestwest of Carnes Mill Park. Went after whites using mepps, but only got 3 smallLMBs. Odd day....too much wind for my liking. But any day out there is good fun!

Thanks for the pm's guys. Looks like it was probably a river darter. They are known to exist in a few Texas rivers including the Guadalupe river.

I was on Canyon on Friday. 2 nice Strippers, 3 Whites, 2 Crappie, however broke off 3 larger strippers at the boat and caught 5 dink LMB. I was Crappie and white fishing with ultra-light and there was a fun battle. But on the other hand the wind was not a fun battle.

LOL Damn man I got to start fishing with you, I didn't see any strippers.

That’s what I’m thinking, I’ve seen a few bikinis; but never a stripper.

I am spending 2 days near Canyon lake in 2 weeks. Will take a kayak with me.

Can you help me a bit, please?

1. What is the typical depth crappies spawn at on this lake?

2. never fished this lake, but current plan is to launch in upper lake and fish standing timber, piles (if I find them). I see few docks and bunch of
tires on google map -- this could be handy. And if it isn't working -- troll smth shiny in the channel for whites/hybrids/whatever. Does this plan look sensible?

Thank you.

Yeah, my bad. I see more of them on Travis.... You have to watch-out for the auto-correct on your phone before posting.

Best to put in up the river, since the wind can be fun on a this lake.

There are always Kayakers between cranes mill and the mouth of the river, but I would never do it. The wind is unforgiving on this lake and the pleasure boats will be starting to ramp up by then.

Launch at Rebecca creek (ramp 11) where it is calm and the fishing is just as good if not better.

What is so special about wind on this lake? Is it too open?

In any case -- for crappies I'll be looking for protected spots (coves, etc). My biggest concern is that since I never fished that lake -- I don't know typical depth they spawn at. I need a reference point -- discovering it on my own can take more than two days.

The surrounding hills funnel the wind in on lake. It is kind of like it does in between big buildings in the city. Up the river is going to get you on some fish quicker. There are plenty of trees from the mouth
on up.
