Good news for fishing? - 07/08/02 05:28 PM

Did any one see the note in Ray Sasser's Outdoors Notebook about this year's crop of fish from the hatceries? Take a look (eapecially the last paragraph about stripers and hybrids):

Hatcheries production xceeds expectations

Texas Parks and Wildlife freshwater fish hatcheries had their best production in several years, according to Inland Fisheries chief Phil Durocher.

"We concentrated on producing striped bass and hybrid stripers, and we knew we would do well on those species," Durocher said. "What we didn't expect was 6.5 million largemouth bass, but we had very good survival rates in the hatchery ponds and good production from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center."

Durocher said TP&W expected a yield of about 5 million largemouth bass. The hatcheries produced a record 4 million striped bass and 2 million hybrid striped bass.

"Those are our best totals ever for stripers and hybrids," Durocher said. "Lakes where we stock those species will get a double stocking this year."
