Cleaning boat after being on the water question.. - 10/31/17 02:33 AM

What’s the best product to use when doing a quick cleaning to the fiberglass after pulling the boat out of the water?

This works between real washing and the occasional waxing.

Wipe it down as soon as it trailered, and the scummy stuff comes right off. .....mostly. Ha

Lucas mist, bass boat saver, and bow to stern are all good products that I have used. Currently I mostly use the Lucas mist.

wouldn't these wax products be bad for the lake water? don't know anything about bass boat saver, but I would expect it was formulated to not use chemicals that would be bad for the lake. but these other products are made for cars, not boats.

This works well for me on the boat and the truck. Plus you can get this at places like Walmart or any auto parts store.

Are you guys using the Lucas Slick Mist/Bass Boat Saver/etc. while at the ramp? I typically use a wet rag to get the scum line off and any shoe prints, etc. on the top coat while at the ramp every trip. I typically go to a car wash every 3-4 trips. But if you guys are using these products as a quick wipe down while at the lake then maybe I could go to the car wash a little less.

Boat bling is what I use. I use the Hot Sauce after every trip. It's expensive but it gets the job done the way I like it. It looks like I washed the boat after I use it. I will never use a different product. I buy it by the gallon off of Amazon because it's cheaper in the long run.

The vinegar works great to take off water spots but it also takes off all wax you have on your boat

It will take you a couple of years to figure out the actual best thing to do but once you do, it is worth it.

We wipe down with the Lucas Slick Mist right after we are loaded. Every trip. If the lake leaves a nasty scum line then we just take it home and wash.

I'm sure they are...but, isn't the exhaust blowing out of the prop bad too?

.......are you from CA?

nope; born and raised in Texas. how about you???

just seems like some are using products not made for that; and these products might have a negative effect on our fisheries.

which I will defend to the end.

any other questions??

Damp towel, works just as well as all the over prices products out there. Oh and some Pledge for a quick shine. I'm sure some will laugh or doubt but I'm betting some already know this.

Best:
Rinse after every use with freshwater, dry, one of the sprays listed above (I started with bassboat saver, now use slick 50) just use something.
Very Least:
wipe down when you leave the ramp, wash ever 3-4 trips followed by a spray wax.

One thing I would make time for, is the motor care. If you don't have time to spray the boat down after every use, make the time to do the outboard, heat generated by the motor will bake the water deposits and lake scum onto the paint.

I've used everything from Vinegar and water, Pledge to Slick Mist. As stated vinegar and water removes wax. Pledge seems to accelerate gelcoat oxidation. Slick Mist. Eage one and Meguaire's are good. I've settled in on BassBoat Saver. I buy it by the gallon from Classic Fiberglass. Real good stuff. Spray, wipe, looks like I just left the car wash.

BBS is a butt whipping. I used it for a couple of years, but it applies like a spray wax. It was a laborious 3 step process of spray on, wipe dry, wipe with damp rag and polish with microfiber cloth. Otherwise, it left a film behind. It looked great afterwards, but too much of a PIA at the boat ramp. Meguiar's Quik Clean for me. Spray and wipe dry. No film and doesn't strip the wax.

I use vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle. You can wipe off dried water spots easily. With the detailers you will have to rub and rub to get the streaks to go away.

what are your thoughts on people that urinate in the lake?

I usually use 50/50 water & vinegar, about every third wipe down I use BTS (bow to stern). My boat always looks new... Wish I had Grandkids! LOL!
