Wrapping a Bass Boat questions - 10/16/17 07:29 PM

Looking at having a wrap applied to my 2000 BassCat Cougar.

Am I correct to assume the rub strip will have to be removed ?
If so, can it be reinstalled? Or do I need a new one ?

How are the edges done, anybody experience them wanting to peel or roll up along the edges?

And how resilient are they in terms of scratches from submerged timber, weeds and limbs ?

Thanks

Don't quote me on this, but I am fairly certain they do not remove the rub rail. As far as durability, they are very resilient up until you start rubbing, banging, hitting rocks, wood, metal, other boats etc. My dad had his for years, and it held up great. My dad does, "baby" his boat quite a bit. But, if you are thinking it is going to start peeling off... Don't. My best advice would be to find someone that comes with good recommendations, and does this for a living; don't go with the cheapest guy you can find.

You pay for what you get when it comes to wraps, Tyler wraps does mine I have used several different companies and he's the best in my books. To answer your question no they don't take the rub rail off, some use razor blades which I'm not a fan of at all. He was a machine that does it to your boat.

What does something like that cost for a 20 foot boat?

Yes sir. I have wrapped four boats by three different companies. See my answers below in Red.

How are the edges done, anybody experience them wanting to peel or roll up along the edges? They heat the film and stretch it to fit around the corners and complex curves of the boat much like the window tinters do. If you use a reputable company, it will not peel off or roll around the edges. They use adhesive around the edges to help it stay in place. The first company I used cut into the clear coat on my boat when they were cutting the film and doing the install. I did not discover this until I removed the wrap 2 years later. I was NOT happy about this!

And how resilient are they in terms of scratches from submerged timber, weeds and limbs? Weeds will not hurt the wrap but timber will scratch or even tear it if you rub it hard enough. Make sure the company you choose uses the thick 3M wrap. I have had both and there is a BIG difference in thickness & quality. The 3rd boat I had wrapped was done by a company I will not name. They claimed to use 3M film but I later found out it was the thinner cheaper stuff. It did not hold up well at all!

Thanks

If you have any other questions shoot me a PM. I just had the wrap removed from my 4th one. The cost varies but it is about $3K for a good one on a 20-21 foot boat.
