Albright for me...maybe there is a better one, but I'm too lazy to learn, lol.

FG. Come by and I'll show you. Been using it over a year. Knot has yet to fail if tied correctly.

Uni to uni knot pretty easy to tie.

Uni-Uni with 6 turns on both lines for regular rod guides

FG for micro guides

All good options above (crazy improved Alberto here)

Been using a dab of loctite super gel over the line to line knot and pressing it in this year
This lays the tag ends down nicely so they don't grab on the guides. Also helps prevent any slipping. Adds about 20 seconds to the knot tying, but finding that its worth it

I use the Alberto it's quick and fairly simple kinda hard to screw up and it works great

Blood knot. Comes out a bit thinner and longer so it goes through the guides a little better. I've never busted a leader off on it

Uni-to-Uni knot here, six wraps on a side. Typically joining 30# or 50# Power Pro to a 12# 100% Trilene flouro leader. The smallest guides I have are on Falcon Lowriders, I don't have any micro-guide rods.

Dodd knot. "Dodd knot video" on YouTube with Barry Dodd is the only one that shows how to tie it correctly. Never had it fail and you can tie it easily on the boat. Ever tried to tie an FG knot while your fishing? Good luck!

I do the double uni as well. Very easy. I'm gonna try the loftier with a nice close trim of the tag ends, esp on my Duckett rods with micro guides.

I'm terrible with trying to learn new knots, but I learned the Alberto quickly and it's a strong knot

Dodd knot looks pretty simple...

Surgeons Knot is my go to knot for Braid-Fluorocarbon. Easiest and quickest for me. I started out using three wraps but now use only two. It has NEVER failed me and will fit through the smallest guide. VERY simple to learn to tie correctly unlike the FG which I like but find difficult to consistently tie.

Re: Knot to use braid to Fluorocarbon - 10/01/17 01:48 PM

I will try the dodd today but do not have problems tying the FG on the water as long as I have my cheaters with me. Surgeon is super easy but hangs in the reel and on the guides. If I use less than a 10 ft leader (vertical Crappie) then I sometimes tie a Surgeon. The FG glides thru the guides and never hangs in the spool. We will see how the Dodd performs.

The FG knot is super easy to tie.
I watched the salt strong video and got it right on the second try.

Re: Knot to use braid to Fluorocarbon - 10/01/17 08:46 PM

I've spent a lot of time on this and came away with the following:

FG knot is generally the best knot for braid to flouro/mono/copolymer line IMO. The challenge is that it's not easy to tie out on the water. It can be done, lot's of people do it, but I don't like to. I tie it when I'm rigging in advance of fishing (garage, parking lot, ramp). With the FG knot I don't mind if the leader is so long that the knot gets into the spool. The knot is basically same diameter as the larger of the two lines you are combining. On small diameter lines (like spinning gear) the knot basically disappears and casts just like the rest of your line.

FG advantages:

Travels through guides easily
Very strong

Disadvantages

Easy to understand how to tie it but still takes time and isn't easy on the water

The Alberto knot is easy to tie and is nice and strong. The downside vs. the FG is it's size. On bigger rods with large guides it's not an issue but for smaller guides you will hear the knot traveling down the rod on the cast.

Alberto advantages:

Easy to tie
Strong

Disadvantages

More bulky than the FG, for small diameter lines not a big deal, for larger braid it is more problematic

So to summarize, I tie the FG when I have time to do it such as in advance of a tournament or when I am not worried about how long I take to tie. If I break off and need to tie something on the water I'll tie the Alberto.

Well the dodd is not bad but hangs more than the FG on the guides. Still testing

Fog knot, hard to learn correctly, but YouTube has great videos

Triple overhand surgeons, never had a problem with strength or casting. Usually tie 10-12lb flouro to #20 smackdown braid or power pro.
