Walmart Batteries - 08/23/17 06:29 PM
I remember a while back a post about Walmart batteries and cannot find it to save my life. Anyway I am looking to buy 4 new batteries for a new trolling motor set up and wanted to do it as economically painless as possible. Never had luck with the Everstarts but does Walmart offer any others that may fit the bill?

Not sure about Walmart but TSC has the EXIDE brand and I have had good luck with them I believe the group 27 deep cycle were right at 100 each

Here is may take for what it is worth. If I can get 2-3 years from TM Batteries, I am thankful. That being said, I have always bought the Wal Mart Deep Cycle Batteries for one reason, if they fail and they are still under warranty, there is always a Wal Mart close to wherever I am fishing. I bought my third set since 2010 last January. I put about 125-150 hours a year on my boat. You can pay more and definitely get a better longer lasting battery, I am just not sure they are worth the extra 100 or more dollars for each one.

Plus 100 on the Walmart batteries. Been using them for years and no problems. just keep'em maintained and they'll be fine and like the man said there's a Walmart on every corner and their warranty's are good.

They carry optima blue tops if your ok with it costing about $180 per battery. Otherwise, nothing wrong with the everstart. As has been mentioned 1 million times on here there's a Walmart everywhere so if you have one go bad you can exchange pretty easily.

Seems like the Everstart lose a cell after 6 months or so. Have literally burnt up at least 5 of them until I finally gave up. Maybe I was over charging them or just used them to death. Flounder gigging, bow fishing, trolling motor, spotlight, underwater fishing lights, above water fishing lights. I'm pretty hard on batteries in general. Guess you guys are right though....keep the receipt and find the closest Walmart.

Yep I use them for the same reason as Geofisher.

Been using them for 20+ years with no real issues. As stated above, there is always a Walmart close by if you lose one for some reason and want to get back on the water.

Been using everstart batteries for years and hardly ever have problems. Just bought 4 new ones to replace the 3 year old ones and they were still going.

Most wet cell batteries are a freaking pain, with AGM's you can drop in series from a 27 to a 24 and usually lose 80 lbs in your boat. To me weight is very important, I've had my boat since 04 I'm on my second set of AGM batteries. It's absolutely amazing, literally plug and play for years...
Walmart batteries are junk.

battery "luck " is what you do to maintain them.
clean terminals, check water (if able to ) monitor your charging system,(including onboard chargers).
never wait until you have the time to recharge after using them, recharge immediately after use.

A tip I learned from an old timer that has always worked for me is when you get a new battery, cover the connections with grease. I use the same grease I use for the wheel bearings. I've never had to clean a connection.

Junk.. Figure the cost every 3 yrs for 4 units sometimes 1 or 2 will lose a cell, its toast.. Walmarts recreational batteries don't have the same warranty as a car battery. I've lived both battery worlds, vibration will kill a wet cell not an AGM...but you obviously have a right to your opinion as I do..

Really depends on use. We burn them down pretty hard but only couple months a year. Never an issue. Don't need receipts anymore, they scan barcode. Even easier to take back. If you can afford it, Duracell agms from Sam's is the way to go

RedSkeeter, What brand of AGM do you use?

Optima blue top. Did up the cranker to a 27 series because of graphs, live wells, lights and so on. Other 3 are 24 series the drop off in reserve and amp hours, etc.. is minimal compared to the 27 series. The weight is significantly less FYI.

I bought 3 batteries this summer — Walmart's Maxx 29 series. They replaced 4-yr old Maxx batteries that actually had some life left, but changed anyway. For the price of these, I'm happy.
I use 3 exide group 31s from home depot or academy, available at both for 109.99 and I use a group 31 exide AGM Mega start from academy for cranking, 235.99 if memory serves me correct. Excellent batteries.

Go to Sam's and buy Duracell. They are Deka batteries rebranded and still made in the same place. One of the best batteries out there. Great prices too. Can't beat them!

I also have been using the Walmart batteries for at least 15 years. The only problem I have run into lately is when I take one back for warranty they want the original receipt not a copy. So I keep the originals in my truck and a copy in with my house receipts for sale tax on income tax time.
And they test the heck out of the bad battery before giving you a new one.

Check out battery manufactures a lot of company's batteries are made by the same people just a different label. Talking bad about one chains battery and it is the same battery with another name.

I have a set of (3 troll, 1 crank) in my boat with 6 years on them and still working fine. Just replaced a pair in a 7.3 Super Duty that were 8 years old.

Re: Walmart Batteries - 08/26/17 08:04 PM
Did a little research and found this
I worked at Delphi battery plant for 5 years before it closed and I moved to the car plant building car and marine batteries so this is one of the few topics on a bass fishing site where I know what I'm talking about.
I loved when I told people where I worked and they would give there opinion on batteries. Some loved our AC Delco batteries others said the would only use a sears die hard. Some said they just went to wal mart and bought the cheap everstarts. Well I can tell you they are all good because we built all 3 brands. When we finished a run of AC delcos they would swithch the label machine over to sears brand and start building die hards.
I always felt the walmarts were the best because when we switched to them we had time to go get a drink because they had to change to a grey case. That was the only difference.
I cant speak about AGM batteries never seen the inside of one but I can promise if it is a lead acid battery any 550 cranking amp battery by any company is going to be nearly exact.
When I was there the big 3 was delphi, excide and johnson controls. We swapped contracts back in fourth all the time one day we were building batteries for Catipillar then we'd get outbid and excide would build them. A year later we'd outbid and get them right back.
Buy the cheapest 29 group batteries you can find for trolling motors and highest cranking amps for big motor you can and youll be fine.

Well there you go, that should settle any argument about battery's. Thanks dobbin for the info. Like I said Walmart battery's are the best, lol.
