I make a triangle out of cardboard and wrap rod with bubble wrap.

I use PVC or the cardboard tubes that I get my rods in.
Got a tube you can have; if your not too far away. Many times you can send them pictures and they do not require the rod back if it is broken. They will trash it anyway.

Cardboard tubes are the cheapest (or free-est) way to go.

Go to any of the stores that carry rods and ask for the shipping tubes. Got quite a few from Bass Pro whenever I needed to ship rods anywhere.

I save a few rod tubes from tackle warehouse just in case.

Check the manufacturers policy. I was instructed to cut the rod just above model number and again further down the blank. I was able to put it in a smaller tube and saved money on shipping

Just pack it in a tube or a pipe, you can easily find it. When I was out for fishing, for safety, I usually do that.
