Schooling Bass Bait Question

Schooling Bass Bait Question - 08/04/17 09:17 PM

For schooling Bass that are busting Shad on top, which of these two baits do you think would be best:

Heddon Fearher Dressed Super Spook Jr, 3 1/2", 1/2 oz
or
Heddon Zara Puppy, 3", 1/4 oz.

If you have used one that works well for schooling Bass, I will appreciate a reply.

God Bless

The Zara Puppy. I've caught so many fish on one bait that the back hook fell off.

Topwaters are great and more fun, but I have better luck with a hard jerkbait on schoolers.

Got in to schoolers out here in San Diego this week. We were throwing an underspin with a Fluke Jr on it and whacking them. Match the hatch. Jerk it and reel it just under the surface. FUN!!

In addition to both of those baits I would also have a square bill or a rattle trap tied on. I have caught a lot of schooling bass on those as well. Throw them out and burn them back.

Match the hatch! Something you can cast far and work fast so they won't get a good look at it.

My friend likes hard jerkbaits. I like a small swimbait; the underspin w/ 3" paddletail or fluke jr works too.

Kastmaster spoon with a feather trebled hook.

Fluke works good for me as well, smoking shad. I use the regular size with a 5/0 round bend, throw it a good ways on spinning gear with braid. I have done good with the plain old super spook too.

Nuthin' beats a clear Near Nuthin' if you have one.

Underspin with a fluke. Hate to use treble hooks when the action is fast. Can't catch many schoolers when there is a clear torpedo stuck deep in your finger...I know...

Re: Schooling Bass Bait Question - 08/06/17 09:31 PM

Rapala has a floating fish gripper I grabbed a coupla weeks ago, and it is fantastic at avoiding the treble finger gash! Best ten bucks spent!
Also, I was alerted to the heddon clear spook jr, and it quadrupled what I was using before (rapala...oops),but then I was at cabelas and picked up a mostly clear 4" yo zuri spook and it doubled the heddon! I think the facets in the finish add a lot of silvery flash...

Also, I dont rush the lure thru the action...I just walk it somewhat slowly...at least that's what works for me, lol

Any version of the clear Zara puppy the one with blue ir the one with green and gold sparkles. We have caught lots of schooling fish every summer for the last 20 years and nothing compares to it. You do need to check the hooks after every few fish they will unscrew without you knowing it.

Re: Schooling Bass Bait Question - 08/06/17 11:05 PM

1/4 oz Kastmaster spoon, change the hooks to a #6 gamakatsu. 8# Nanofil with a 6# leader on a spinning rod. I can cast it a mile. If you can't reach 'em you can't catch 'em. Cast past the school and wind it about 1 foot under the water. It's dynamite!!

Re: Schooling Bass Bait Question - 08/07/17 12:53 AM

Nothing more fun than a good topwater bite but honestly you will generally catch more fish running a fluke or squarebill THROUGH the school instead of a topwater OVER the schoolers.

It's the topwater blowup I'm after!

Trap is my #1 then fluke or senko, and a clear torpedo.
