Canyon Lake help

Canyon Lake help - 07/30/17 09:55 PM

Hey All,
moved down to Seguin for work in San Antonio. I fish somerville, fayette, bastrop, and Coleto. Well Canyon is 30 minutes away and wanted to start fishing it. Was looking for some help. I don't see hardly anything posted on TFF about it. Was hoping to get some basics from persons who fish it. Most of all wanted to know what are the best ramps to launch from, IE. stay away from all the rec boats launching.

thanks in advance

Really no way to avoid the ski boaters and stuff unless you launch near the river or in Tom's Creek. Even then there will be a few here and there, but not too bad. As far as fishing goes, it's been slow for me as my bite has died off the last couple of weeks. I was catching some good ones on football jigs and mag shaky heads but not anymore. That lake is hard to fish shallow during the Summer. You can always catch fish shallow but they're few and far between. I'd try a drop shot or shaky head around the bluff walls and bushes.

In addition to Toms creek try launching at boat ramp 8, fish that pocket then work left to Cranes Mill marina, fish left side all the way to shallow area in back. You can find map of ramps on corps of engineeers site. Good luck.

Better fishing on lake placid under i-10 since you're in seguin already but you will still have all the skiers and wake boats..

Fishing is really slow there right now! Been catching fish on drop shot, numbers are not great as of now! Tough lake right now

Book a trip with Charles Whited......local guide and hell of a stick on that lake (and most).

Exactly what I was going to say! The fish that man catches and how he does it will teach you more in 1 day than 5 years on your own.

That lake is a whole different kind of beast. Always windy and can lead to some tough fishing days. It holds a good population of solid fish though when you figure them out. You can look at the TTZ reports, they always have a write up with what worked that night. You will see 10 or so teams that did well, then another 40 teams on the short side of 5lbs every week. Here is a link to a recent one with some good tips: http://thursdaynighters.com/2017/05/char...h-15-78-pounds/

Here are the ramps:
http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/canyon/Maps/Ramps_ShortFormat_2012_Full_WebVersion.pdf

2 and 23 are free with good ramps, good parking, and docks on opposite sides of the lake
6 and 17 are also good free ramps, but without docks (you can easily shore your boat in both though)

Summer weekends are full of drunk boaters, I do not fish Canyon on the weekends in the summer, but if you do Toms Creek is the place to go, it is a huge no wake zone with trees.

Cranes Mill and Comal Parks are where the majority of your rec boats are going to be launching.
