Flipping/pitching question

Flipping/pitching question - 07/21/17 04:18 PM

What size weight do most of y'all flip with when fishing brush/trees?

I always find myself using fairly light weights between 1/8-1/4 oz. I sometimes wonder if I miss bites because my bait doesn't always hit the bottom while flipping salt cedars and other trees.

Primarily 3/8 and 1/2 oz. depending on how thick the brush is and how deep it is. And I always peg my weight with a bobber stop when fishing heavy brush.

This time of year; with shallow brush at it's thickest and bass metabolism at it's highest
Most of the time
Less than 10ft--3/8oz
Deep timber--1/2oz

Looks like I use a lighter weight than most.

Is rate of fall not a big deal for most of you?

When I used to night fish all summer, I threw nothing but a 1/8 oz. weight on my worms. But I wasn't fishing in the super thick stuff. Light weights hang up easier in heavy cover. Plus, they may never get through all that stuff to the bottom. And yes, I'm sure you're missing bites by not getting all the way to the base of those salt cedars.

^^^Usually this. But if the wind picks up, I'll go a little heavier for accuracy and distance.

3/8 oz. pitching the streamline baits like: Lizards - Senkos - Ring Fries and etc..

1/2 oz. pitching the bulkier baits like: Brush Hogs, Craws and Creature Baits.

Like 5/8ths a lot... especially if 4 foot or more. But will keep dropping until i get bites or as it shallows up

3/8 to 1/2....I'm a line watcher, so if your not sure if you got a bite or think your missing them you need to start watching your line. If your in 10ft and see your line stop and you should know your bait didn't fall that quick and hit bottom, you better be setting the hook.

1/4 - 1/2 ounce. The faster the fish want it to fall the heavier weight you use. And you always want to a weight that gets the bait to the bottom as most of your strikes happen on the fall.

Do y'all try different weights throughout the day or just kind of stick with one weight depending on the wind?

I tend to change weight based on how windy it is. If I can't throw a 3/16 ounce weight because it gets to windy I usually move to a 1/4. I guess Alan Henry has messed me up when it comes to flipping/pitching.

I've got plenty of 3/8-1/2 ounce tungstens but rarely use them. I'll try to up the weight in the brush a bit more.

Usually two rods, 5/16 and 3/4. Sometimes a faster drop speed triggers them. If they're up near the top, you might have to swim the bait through the branches and then I might have to go lighter or with a bigger plastic.

I used to throw lighter weights, but have found I get more bites on most days with the 3/8+ oz. I think it forces more of a reaction bite with the heavier weight even if they're not feeding.

When flipping trees in 6-10 feet of water I like the heavier weights so I can sink my bait as far and deep as possible into the cover, these summer bass bury themselves in the trees. 1/2-3/4 ounce are the best in my opinion on 17 lb fluorocarbon.

I do not flip but I love to pitch baits and I use 3/8 or a 1/2 oz bait all the time. Jigs, creature baits, and craw tubes are the main things I pitch.

I use 1/2 oz only. Just practiced with my pitching rod and that wt for years so I can present the bait softly and accurately-it also tends to get to the bottom through the cover. I also peg it.

1/4 to 1/2 oz depending on the cover

1/2 Unless I'm punching and that depends on how thick it is.
