Fishing deep is tough.

I'm not THAT used to fishing in "deep water", but Lake Travis is in another universe on deep. Finally got the electronics on the boat up and running and went out to the Gloster bend area of Travis yesterday morning to get away from the main lake jet fleas and skiers. Wow. 10' off the bank and in 40' of water. Fishing deep to me has generally been deeper than 10' but typically no more than 25' to 30', and generally those areas were on long sloping points or humps. The last drop out there yesterday was at 45' down to 62'. I'm def going to need some help on this lake. Fished from 7am to 10am before the fleas surrounded me. Caught 2 lmb on a square bill in about 10' on a bluff wall. Both were around 1.5 pounds. "Shrimpin is tough"...Forest Gump.

I generally don't go deeper than 20 ft. If the water is deeper than that I look for suspended fish in the depth I want. Deep divers that match that depth or super flukes weightless work. Fish can sit on top of ledges that drop off to deeper water. Pick a depth that you are comfortable with and work it.

Find the thermocline and fish just above that depth on structure and points across the lake.

When we were at table rock we caught a lot in 60-84ft it is a lot different just have to adapt which can be difficult for a lot of people. Graphs are your best friend learn them as much as you can.

Fishidy.com for very helpful topo maps overlaid on a google earth image. This will help you find what you're looking for whether it be flats, humps, saddles, creek and river channels and bends, bluffs, points, and on and on. This will help you eliminate a lot of water before you even get on the lake and give you direction for the day ahead. Good luck!

Thanks for the info and encouragement. Branden Hollingshead, maybe I need to go out and watch you catch em deep! ( subtle enough?) I did see the buy that won on Travis say he was fishing a football jig in 60' of water to catch a couple. What techniques do you guys find will work in something over 25'? I'm decent with C rig, T rigs, and jigs. Don't own a fairy wand so don't do much drop shot fishing. (although I need to learn I guess)I can't get a crank bait past about 20' at best. Count down with swim baits? FYI, Travis is more of a river than what I call a traditional lake.

I like to use a Carolina rig for deep off shore fishing, I generally fish deep humps in the summer months 25 to 30ft of water. Points also are good for me also with a dd22 going over the top or fishing the sharp break lines on the points.

Drop shot deep. Braid to floro leader. You will feel if a fish breathes on your bait.

Fish docks and marinas. Try a small jigging spoon out in the deep stuff.

Football jig, jig headed swimbait and a grub is how we caught most of them. Soon as you found the bait you would find the bass. Don't be afraid to down size line 12-15lb helps feel the bite that deep

Fishing deep is not for everyone it takes time on the water to learn what you're looking at and how to postion the boat along with making the right cast. I learned this on Amistad fishing deep points ending in 70-100 feet of water

I've done best at Travis fishing where outside channel bends sweep by a vertical cliff, and then fish both the ledges and the slopes on both ends - on soft swim baits, mostly.
