Wind Speed - 06/23/17 08:46 PM

Hey what do you consider max wind speed for going out? Had a very difficult time getting back to the dock a few weeks ago on Lake Grapevine - lots of water over the bow. Boat is 20ft skeeter.

Re: Wind Speed - 06/23/17 08:58 PM

fishing in anything over 25 is not enjoyable

whether its dangerous or not depends on the lake and direction

boats are supposed to get wet

Anytime you're getting water over your bowels you got big problems.

When it's this hot and the winds are 15-25 I have other things I can do for fun. Now if they had a boat ramp inside Hell's Gate at PK I'd go there.

We've been out on rayburn in 30+ but we had place to get out of it and a safe route to get there without getting beat up. The wind doesn't bother me unless I'm fishing off shore

Re: Wind Speed - 06/23/17 11:15 PM

It really depends on the lake. For a big lake like Travis or Buchanan, 15-20+ mph wind is going to be brutal no matter what. 15 is doable but anything 20+ and I'm most likely staying home.

For smaller lakes(Bastrop, Decker, etc) my boat will handle 20+ winds pretty easily

20-25 for me with a 17' boat. Any more than that I start to get wet and not enjoying the ride

Re: Wind Speed - 06/23/17 11:34 PM

I get annoyed anything over 15, but I draw the line at 20. I live in west texas, not many places to hide.

3-4 minimum. 20-25 maximum.

I like 10-12 the most. Enough to mask the boat noises a little...but not enough to arc my line too bad.

As far as wind like people said it depends on which lake you're on. Watch the forcast and on a new lake just ease your way up on wind speed until you feel uncomfortable, then you will know your limits for that lake. As for the water/bowel problem you need to get some resorb they give it to calves that get scours, should do the trick.

The stronger the wind the rougher the water, thus making your bowels much more uncomfortable.

Hopefully if you get enough water to actually cause your bowels to move you are prepared for such a catastrophe.

For a tournament it is what it is but for everyday fishing a 20mph sustained I'll usually pick another day.

Re: Wind Speed - 06/24/17 06:08 PM

Depends on the lake. As long as I'm not taking waves over the bow I'm fishing.

20 is max for me, and I have a 21 ft boat. Be safe.

I have a Ranger, so I can take most any wind speed.

Once it gets over about 25 mph sustained then I may not go out.

Re: Wind Speed - 06/25/17 03:01 PM

To the OP, I fished a tournament on Fork one day in early April where at blast off time it was about 15-20 mph. By noon is was blowing a steady 30-35 mph and gusting to over 50.

That's not a typo, FIFTY MPH at times. We stayed tucked back into a small "sheltered" cove but the run back up the lake was treacherous to say the least. I was a lot younger (and dumber) but we made it back to Lunker Lodge in time for weigh in. My partner had a 13.61 SAL in my livewell that day.

We knew a big cold front was coming but had no idea how bad the wind was supposed to get because we didn't even think to look at a forecast. This was before iPhones. wink
