Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 01:28 AM

If so, what #, clear or green, and what application, rod/reel?

Just curious as so many running braid and/or Floro

Thanks.

Topwater baits. 12lb clear unless I'm fishing over grass then I use braid.

The only mono I use, 15 and green for bass, 40lb lime green for catfishing, the only other mono I use is Mr crappie for crappie fishing

Used to use it. Check out BPS Excel line. Has much less memory.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 02:11 AM

Why pay for the others. No memory problem because at the price I change all reels every time I go.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 02:11 AM

Only use it for leaders and topwaters. Best mono made and tough as nails!

Big Game green, use it on all mono applications.

Everything other than one of my Crigs and a rig. Those get braid for main line. Big game is outstanding.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 02:22 AM

Yes, started using 15lb green on Toledo Bend in 1989 when I found out a few of the Toledo guides were using it. Around heavy timber and thick grass it has been great. I have experimented with other lines over the years but I go back to Big Game because of the reliability and price. Last spring a friend and I hired a seasoned guide on lake Fork and Big Game was his line of choice on all his reels in the boat. I will add that I have had good luck with Excel clear blue fluorescent from Bass Pro Shops also. It helps me see the line when worm or jig fishing.

8 and 10lb green on my spinning reels
12 and 15 clear on baitcasters for cranks, traps and top waters
Just re-spool after any heavy day of fishing since it's so inexpensive

Clear 12# and 15# rod reel topwater, crank baits, flukes.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 03:41 AM

Yes it's still good stuff.
I have caught more than a few really big fish on big game.
Other stuff is good as well, but big game still works.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 04:14 AM

I used clear on nearly every reel I have in 12 pounds. Have landed some big fish at the coast and on fresh water never had and problems. I usually change all the lines out every year.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 04:36 AM

Sounds like 12 and 15 are most common - and apparently green is more favored.

Hate to sound dumb, but most of my fishing has been done with clear line over my lifetime. Is green underwater less visible, and does water clarity affect your choice of clear vs green, or does it have little effect on bass? It seems when reading on Crappie, some feel those panfish are sometimes fickle in what line diameter and color you use. I understand FC seems to disappear underwater, but clear mono does not seem to be bad, I simply wondered what happens to green underwater - it seems to be a non-issue on fish. Do you folks who favor green like it to see your line above the water for strikes?

Appreciate all of you sharing your experience. Thanks gang.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 04:49 AM

Any thing I don't use fluorocarbon or braid on. Like top waters other than frogs. I have a couple of spinning reels with two spools and have braid on one spool and other on w/big game. I keep an assortment of spools of Big Game from 12 to 20 pound in the box with fluro and braid. There are applications for all choose what's best for the situation. Which is why I have 18 rod/reels in the boat. Course this includes the setups my wife fishes with. She's a killer with a rogue ! It's most of the time the green. This is the best mono JMHSO!

I landed a 30lb flathead on 15lb green

Yup I use green, anything from 12lb to 20lb,everything from a Yellow Magic to a Whopper Plopper 130.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 11:34 AM

Yes. 12 lb and 15 lb for cranks and top water depending on the application. I use clear because an episode of Hook n Look showed all the different lines and weights under water. The green big game was more visible than the clear.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 02:44 PM

I just bought more 650 yd spools of 20#,15# and 12# Big Game green.
If no other lines were made, It wouldn't bother me at all.
It's the cheapest and still works best for me.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 02:50 PM

I use it on my surf fishing combos. Cheap and strong. I use mostly 30lb and up in the sand.

I'm a fluorocarbon and braid to flouro guy when bass fishing and straight fluorocarbon when flats fishing.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 03:00 PM

Big Game is one of the best monofilaments for the money but I like co-polymer lines better so I use McCoys and P-line instead.
Posted By: CCTX

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 03:57 PM

^^^^^agree. I really like McCoys, but I had a weird spool of it recently (frail/brittle 10lb Mean Green)

Pline CXX is a little less stretchy, more abrasion resistant and stronger than Big Game (with about the same memory) and doesn't cost a whole lot more.

Yes I do. Green for Topwater and spinnerbaits

Yep still use 15 green for topwaters.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 06:07 PM

It's the only mono I use. Mostly green but I do have some clear. I change it often so memory not an issue unless you get over 20 lb. line (IMHO).
Posted By: Bulletman99

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 06:10 PM

Been using it for at least 25 years. I do have occasions where I spool up braid but 10-20 lb Green Big Game is the norm. I have tried other mono and many brands of Flouro which I have zero confidence in. I have lost many big fish setting the hook with flouro and the knot breaks. Again I use green 100% of the time because in clear water under a high sun you can see a reflection from the suns glare off clear line.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 06:37 PM

I don't use it anymore, but did for years back in the day. Its still dang good line for the money. If I couldn't get Suffix or BPS I would probably go back to it.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/08/17 08:46 PM

Very productive thread here folks - enjoying all the feedback and appreciate those who have replied. Thank you again.

I do wish they made 6lb BG for spinning, but have run the 8# w/o any memory problems on 25 and 30 sized Pfluegers. Run 8 and 10 on Baitcast more recently with a somewhat whippy Medium BPS rod/reel for various lures, no issues, but felt both were a tad light for general purpose bass fishing. Will likely p/u a spool of the 12#. I have spools in 8, 10, 15 and 25, the latter for plans for Catfishing which I was doing in the past. The study on the line visibility underwater sounds interesting. Heard mixed views how fish react, and again seems like Crappie might be more fickle than bass. The green must be working fairly well given the # of replies of fans. How much it costs in strikes vs clear would be interesting, but likely hard to quantify. I would imagine line diameter and color might change how fish react based on what type of lure is used, and speed of retrieve, just a hunch.....as well as the water clarity. Good stuff gang, looks like I can do worse than using BG for certain applications. I have used with good success P-line CX in 6 and 8 for UL and Light Spinning, and played with braid briefly. Sounds like worm and jig fishing is more often done with something other than Mono. Like someone above, I spent time years ago at Toledo Bend as a kid, in those days baitcasters were often spooled with 15 BG....lots of fish were caught.

Oh yea. I use a lot of Tatsu floro. but still keep 3 or 4 reels spooled up with green Big Game 15 or 17 pound.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/10/17 06:40 AM

Nope, stretches like a rubber band. Jimmy Houston once told me Big Game was originally made for saltwater fishing (thus the name Big Game) According to Houston, it was made to absorb the shock of a marlin or tuna strike on a trolled lure , and that's all he used it for. Good enough for me.
Now trilene tri-maxx, that was some good stuff.

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/11/17 09:10 PM

Isn't Houston a "dramatic" kind of guy?

Rubber band....IDK. Seems to be a "stretch" wink

Re: Anyone still using Trilene Big Game? - 01/11/17 11:37 PM

Yep. I used it for everything for a long time but recently started venturing out trying all different sorts of lines from Seaugar FC to braid. For my skill level, it works just fine. I caught my PB on it and many 6+ pound bass on Big Game that has been on a reel, laying on the deck for a month. I'm not saying it's awesome, I am just saying it doesn't suck. IMO.

every rod that I use mono on...love the bulk spools so I can keep the line fresh...keep 25, 20, 15, 12, 10, 8 lb in the boat - both clear and green...also carry braid and floro too...

KC - what determines your choice of clear vs green.
Always been curious on the impact of line choice vs bite

i still use it. Mostly 20lb for leader lines, 3 way rigs and trolling set ups that i may run. Ive used it for years. Its some tough stuff and has never really failed me. That said, its pretty thick stuff. Kinda like running a fence line. lol

15lb green on topwater, backing for braid and flouro, leader for c-rig. I think that's about it. But I keep a bulk spool handy at all times. Coach
