Athens - 3/29

Posted By: M. Alexander

Athens - 3/29 - 03/29/16 11:12 PM

Water temp: 63-68 degrees
We boated 16, including several nice slots up to 4.75lbs.
Frog bite is getting there; just over half our fish came on hollow bodies or toads. The others were caught with weightless senkos, T-rigged & wacky. Missed & broke off a couple of overs at the boat...grrr.

Athens fished big today. We never fished within 200yds of another boat & there were plenty launched.

Glad I am going to Toledo Bend.
If fishing Athens you better find you a spot and sit on it.....because if you try to move around you are just gonna make someone mad. I see this as a powder keg.
If not in a tournament just go early,,,, real early,,,,, and go sit on a spot.
Because by 7:15am every good spot on Athens will have 10 boats and 10 Kayaks fishing on it.
Better yet,,,,,go to Toledo, Sam Rayburn or Palestine ...... less stressful.

"RED"is the color for Athens.

by-the-way: for all those tournament fishermen,,,,,,
I will be at the ramp early Saturday morning selling my Tournament Tip Sheet and map of the BIG BASS holes. $10 and you can have the most up-to-date info on what the fish are doing on Lake Athens.

I have checked the Media Bass Tournament rules and this is very legal. Nothing is mentioned about gaining information for the purpose of finding/catching fish,,,,,before or during tournament hours.

I'm not fishing a tournament so I won't be up early. I'll PayPal you 20 for a map that helps catch fish. Apparently I need all the help I can get. breakdance

Are there good places to camp around Athens? I've never been to that lake.

For the regulars out there, how much do you think this week's front is going to push off the bedding fish Sat-Sun? It's not getting "cold" per se but wondered how sensitive these fish are to the front. This will be my first time on Athens.

I'm not sure if there is any camping.

Re: Athens - 3/29 - 03/31/16 06:43 PM

1.) don't know that they are letting anyone "camp". I looked up the regs before and the only thing they say is that no temporary structure may be up longer than 30 days. So really I would think weekend camping would be OK,,,,,,,but there are no "facilities".

2.) Front ? / What Front ? ........ Athens fish don't know about fronts.

Finally; just watched the Honey Hole Athens Show that they filmed March 7th and just released. All Bill showed was the basic "community" spots. None of the major BIG fish spots were shown. Thanks Bill,,,, really mean it. The spots shown will certainly produce fish and fun fish to catch,,,,,,,but the tournament winners are elsewhere.

it will be an interesting weekend.

IMO, once they're locked on, they ain't moving until their deal is done. We didn't do much sight fishing on Tues. because there was so much cloud cover it was hard to see. The few I could see we had to be right on top of. I pulled one off right under my feet. I thought for sure she'd spook. I literally had 2' of line out & dipped my senko on top of her, she bit, I yanked, & boat flipped her on the deck. I admit not very "sporting", but fun nonetheless.

The weather won't bother these fish. I fished last Monday and air temp was 32degrees when we got on the water. by noon we were bed fishing. water temp won't drop enough to hurt the fish.

I wrote an answer then deleted it.
I don't see the point in answering a question like that.
it wouldn't matter what I answered it would be a BIG fish tale.

I'm trying to figure out how your BIG BASS map can have very many spots. Last I can remember reading, you hadn't caught anything over 8lbs.....ever.

I'm not sure about you, but I consider 8 pounds and actually considerably less BIG BASS

Re: Athens - 3/29 - 04/01/16 12:24 AM

Not me at all.....8lbs is a solid fish.

I consider it the minimum in Texas to be considered big.

We need a terminology post....

Big bass = 8-9.99
Toad = 10-12.99
Monster = 13+

etc...

Other than Media and the Kayak tournament are there any other tournaments going on tomorrow at Athens. Just wondering how crowded it's really going to be.
