I remember when lakes in Texas used to produce fish like that. Maybe if they hadn't killed all the grass at fork, we could still produce giants like that.

Lake Dixon I bet. Small lake that has produced giants.

Caught on one of Mickey Ellis's glide baits you've got to take out a loan to buy.

I can't imagine what it would feel like when you first pulled a fish like that out of the water.

It's one of those fish that is so damn big it looks fake. Congrats to the guy. . .I can't even imagine what one of those tanks feels like at the end of your line.

Which of his lures is considered a glide bait? I saw the soft lures and hard baits and was confused about which is a glide bait.

Re: 16.3lb Caught in CA Yesterday - 02/28/16 11:24 PM

From what I can tell it was a prototype bait he calls the 316 Kokanee Glide. Not 100% sure, just going off what I see on social media.

Funny, but none of those boats in the pic have wraps.

Re: 16.3lb Caught in CA Yesterday - 02/29/16 12:42 AM

The fish was caught from shore. The guy saw it a few days ago when it chased one of his baits. He had been dropping by intermittingly and it finally took the bait. He's only caught 5 fish this year, but 3 of them were over 10lbs.

I've fished Wohlford a few times in my past. Typical SD lake. Small and clear and stocked all winter long with trout. Those are rental boats because they have banned private boats there because of Quagga mussels. My buddy Mike caught a 10 pounder there once. Nice little lake with typical San Diego giants swimming in it.

We've had a few of these 3:16 glide baits in our store and they sold right away. The detail Mickey puts into them is insane.

Story with quotes from Springer. There are guys (everywhere, I guess) out in California that have the patience and mindset to fish for monsters only and don't catch a lot of fish, but catch tanks. He is one of them, apparently.

As a kid I remember fishing out of those boats. Most of the time they came with either a 9 or 15 horse motor...
You would carry all of your gear from your vehicle, down the dock and try not to drop anything in the lake. The trout trucks would back up with the back up alarm going... Those stud bass would come running like a dinner bell...

The SD lakes are pumping them out hard this year so far. Lower Otay produced a good one a couple weeks back. My bet is on DVL giving up the next WR

The California lakes are coming alive. Heard they are on fire at Clear Lake, catching 30 pounds there right now is no big deal. Must be nice!

Greg is a die hard swimbait angler who consistently produces big fish. He fishes with his buddy Ryan Block who also hung a 16lb swimbait monster last year. True trophy hunters. Congrats to Greg, I am sure there will be more to come!

That picture just looks stupid by the way he's holding it in comparison with his body that fish should weigh at least 175 pounds. Still an awesome fish !

I did a quick check and the last reported/documented fish caught in Texas larger than this one was 17 years ago.

Re: 16.3lb Caught in CA Yesterday - 03/01/16 02:20 PM

That's a humbling picture. Makes you realize that no matter how big of a fish you can catch there is always somebody out there catching one bigger.
Congrats to that guy.
I would like to fish California someday but that's a tough deal for a Texas guy just getting out there and then I think things are different there, probably hard to adjust to without experience. Looks like a boat rental only lake from the pic??- probably open only certain hours/days. Gotta watch the trout stocking I would think as well. Lots of different variables and I believe the competition is high there as well among people trying to catch big ones. Idk, but great fish anyway.

This fish was caught on Lake Wohlford. This is a small lake about 30 minutes north of San Diego CA.

Except for the fact that Wohlford is mud brown and silty. Very non-typical CA lake. Used to fish it every weekend.
