Boat trailer inspection

Received a letter stating that trailer inspection is now needed before getting tags.
I recall seeing a post here a while back about this, can't find it...

Anybody have location around Plano area they use?
I've called a couple places, no one knows what I'm talking about.

Anyplace that does vehicles is supposed to do trailers also. It's new so I think a lot of people are still confused. Got a buddy that does side job at inspection place that told me

Any trailer rated for 4501 pounds or more is required to get an annual inspection. (Farm trailers are exempt)

You must have brakes on your trailer as well to pass the inspection. Not sure how well they really check though.

Went thru this last year. Found a place in North Fort Worth, told me a didn't need it, I believe you have to to over 4500 lbs. Went ahead and paid the seven dollars and got it done anyway. When I went to get new reg. they said I didn't need it, your under 4500 lbs. Then why put it on my renewal notice? Answer: I dunno know. Very few of the insp. stations for auto will do them, the place I went was a truck tire shop off of 820.

Dps.texas.gov you can do a search for a inspection station and yes 4501 Gvwr and up require inspection

Farm trailers are not exempt home made trailers are all my trailers are farm trailers and still had to get it done.

My boat wont have to get it next year. I talked to the place I get my tags and told them there was no way my boat and trailer weighed that much they told me next year before I buy the tag to tell them again and they would change the weight in the system so I wouldnt need to get them anymore.

farm trailers are exempt Grout is correct on this ,I print out the list for folks every week. I guess if your in Harris county it could be different ?

Trailers that are registered with farm tags are exempt.

I hope the part about the brakes is either not true, or not really enforced. Mine is over 4500 but the brakes were pulled off of it. I didn't have an issue the first time I got it tagged, but that would suck to fail for that.

Just did mine yesterday and the lady was very nice and made the change. Just don't know if they will do it through the mail or not. I don't like going down there to renew. I tried to renew on line and the trailer inspections do not come through on the computer to Austin and then to your county Tax Collector; so I had to go down to the office. Glad I did seeing I got it changed to the under weight; so no more inspections. We will see if it comes through the mail next year like it use to.

brakes are required to be working . At 20 mph truck and trailer must stop within 20 ft safely. Also make sure your 3 lights in center rear are working. all inspection stations should be checking everything on their list you will only get a couple of warnings before the fines start and then lose your licence to inspect ! At my business it is more of a hassle than a help but I take it very seriously !

Well that sucks. Guess I'm going to be screwed if they check because my whole assembly is gone. Wonder if you can take the boat and trailer to get weighed, and get the gross weight changed if you're under the 4500?

Just called the tax office. They said if you take the boat and trailer to get weighed and it is under the 4500, then they will change it in their system.

that's good news! how many bass boats with trailers are more than 4500? I don't think too many, but not for sure. I have another enclosed trailer than can haul 10,000 pounds, but it is less than 4500 empty. Hmmm.

Your box trailer will require inspection if it's rated to carry 10k. Empty weight doesn't matter.

This is correct. It goes by loaded weight.

My Skeeter FX21 was over the amount and had to get it inspected before I could get my registration tags.

That sure is funny that I got letters on mine that they had to be done. If it was a manufactured trailer with farm tags it has to be done is what I was told.

The lady told me once they change it on the computer you shouldnt get a letter anymore.
