Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 03:03 AM

When you hit a tree on your back swing that you swear wasn't there 5 seconds before your cast! Haha

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 03:06 AM

Got to keep that one in the rod box to keep the eagles from tying to nest on it.

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 01:50 PM

i did a double "WTH?" I reared back to cast and hooked another rod of the deck. Backlashed the hell out of one of my Lews reels while hooking and CASTING one of my Steez combos into the water. So, while I had a HUGE nest to try and fix, it had to wait until I dug my Steez Frog combo out of the slushy mossy weedy water! That one cast could have cost my $1000. Not counting line. Lol. At that exact moment, I just loaded the rods back into the box and went home.

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 06:38 PM

I didn't do it very much at all in my latter years and it was usually something like this that caused it. My most memorable one was; in my younger years, trying to throw my first Mann's 20+ on a rod that wasn't even close to being designed to do that. A 5.5 foot Berkley Lightning Rod, pistol grip in heavy action. I slapped myself it the back and wound up wearing that crankbait to the house and my dad had to remove it. The back lash was just about as bad if not worse.....its a lot of fun to load a rig and drive about 10 miles with a crankbait buried up in your back................

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 06:51 PM

Heres the most important part

#1 Set your drag so that your lure "slowly" falls to the ground when you let your line out.

#2 now when you cast it should be like a closed dace reel and no back lash.

#3 Just before the lure hits the water put your thumb lightly on the spool to slow the lure down then come to a complete stop.

Setting your spool tension knob is the most important part. Remember you want to set it so your lure will slowly fall to the ground when letting line out before cast. grin

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/09/15 10:16 PM

I don't think some of you understand what happened. It's not like I just casted it and got a backlash. I know what I'm doing. But it's kinda hard to prevent one when your lure slaps a tree on your back swing right as you are coming forward which is what happened. I've been using bait cast rigs for 17+ years so I know what I'm doing. It was just a poorly placed tree that I swore wasn't behind me when I started my cast.

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/10/15 02:58 AM

not even close to a trophy backlash anyone can do that. Its a trophy when you cant see the reel under all the line eeks

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/10/15 03:10 AM

No I've had some worse ones when I first started out but this on was pretty bad. When it was all said and done I lost about half the line on the reel haha still managed to catch a couple fish on it today though

Re: Horrible!!! - 05/10/15 03:33 PM

Glad to see I'm not the only one. But that little snarl? That's so amateurish. Doesn't hold a candle to my small ones. My big ones jam the reel. But I'll keep practicing, I'll get the hang of it one of these days. The way things going so far that day's not going to be too soon.
