Anyone ever fish Lake Toho in FL? - 03/09/15 05:52 PM

I know it isn't a Texas lake, but I have a business trip to Orlando planned at the end of March and was thinking on staying an extra day and going out on Lake Toho. Anyone ever fished it and any recommendations for guides?

Yes...several times.....it is a great lake. Most of the guides will want to use live golden shiners for bait and it makes for a lot of fun, but they do get expensive. I have used Capt L.W. Boully several times in the past but I am not sure he is guiding any more. Try this website:

Agreed, with the statement above, almost all the guides shiner fish. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) In my opinion shiner fishing that lake is probably the fastest way for the average guy to get to a DD in the country. They'll let you throw lures, but most are not a fan because bites can be hard to come by on artificial baits. At this point you've probably missed the peak, but should still have a good shot at some toads.

Thanks guys. Not a huge fan of shiner fishing but have done it back in the day when fishing with Grandpa. Back then we ate everything we caught. Catch and release was still non-existent back then. I figured it might be a little late for the area but can't not do it when I am that close fish

Thanks. I booked Captain Sumner for the 25th. They said what you said about the shiners and recommended at least trying a couple of dozen which are like $50 so I will probably give it a try. I will be at Toledo Bend the next week so hope I don't get spoiled.............

I just got back from the FLW event there. It is a really cool lake. Fishing was tough for us, but there was still an 11, few 10's, and numerous 8-9's brought to scales on artificial. I think Fork is much better for quality and numbers, but Toho would still be up there best lakes in country. I would also look at Kissimmee, not sure if Toho guides will run down there or a different set of guides, most of the good fish were caught in Kissimmee. I heard the Bass Open it was opposite with better fishing in Toho.

Look at the guides list and see if they fished Bass Open or FLW Tour there to see who's doing well. Most of the local sticks at FLW didn't do great. I wouldn't fish with Seagraves, heard he is an [censored] and wasn't on fish last week.

New guy here but have fished Toho last month and once in 2014 while on vacation . It's true that most guides will recommend using live shiners for the best chance at the big girls. Last month I caught one over ten and lost one bigger in the grass at Toho..along with other 5-8lbers. I'm from Delaware and our fishing is terrible compared to Florida or Texas. I'm dying to get to one of the many hawg factories in Texas ..especially after seeing the big ones that were all caught last Saturday.

Did you catch the fish in your signature pic in Delaware?

No, I wish. That was caught in a neighborhood pond in Kissimmee when I was there last month. That would be in contention for a state record in my home state.

Grew up in FL, and fished it many times. Personal best came from Toho (12.75#). Good luck!!!

This is the big one I caught at Toho last month in the poring rain. I'm sure most on here have had a giant or two get off before landing them. On the same day I caught this one I lost a giant first thing in the morning and it wore on me for quite a while. Even now I would trade any fish for that one.

I fished it in May of 2010 I beleive. Tough lake because of everything looks fishy. It took me awhile to break the lake down. I did manage 1 over 7lbs on a frog. A few in the 2-3lb range flipping in isolated grass. Found schoolers on a few morning that were just fun to fish. There were several days either that evil mouse that lives there had my name or the winds were too strong for me to fish.

Fun lake but takes some effort to figure it out.

I fished with Captain Rick Butler 407-922-3946 today on Toho. He's been fishing Toho since he could hold a fishing rod. You say you are going in 3-4 weeks which will coincide with the shad spawn and great topwater action at Toho.

I fished today from 0800 to 2pm. We caught 11 LMB all on weightless stick baits. The spawn looked to be about 70% done. I highly recommend Captain Butler. He was referred to me by Art Ferguson (another highly recommended guide)
