While fishing Little Caney - 02/26/15 12:12 AM

I was jig fishing stumps in the area across from the big brick home that faces the lake. I came around that lil bend and there she was.

Yep, I saw a gator in Little Caney about 8 years ago. That might be the same one grown some.

WOW! nice. I have yet to see one of those out there with my own eyes. Of course I only get to go there a couple times a year. Nice pic.

Cool to see but why is it out in the cold?

Was that from a few weeks ago when the weather was nice?

Picture was taken 3 or 4 weeks ago. It was cool and windy that day. But the sun was out.
I was about 10 ft from it when i first saw it. Had to get my phone out to take a pic, plus I didn't want to bother it.

That spot is after the big cove on the right (headed into caney) after the trailers. The creek splits off there for a little bit. Right up against the bank there is about 8 to 10 foot of water. Usually holds a few fish.

Can often find a few on them sunning in the back of Caney when its warmer.

I saw 2 of them just that size back there on the same day. I suspect they were nesting. I was on the trolling motor and when I got to close with the boat one of them came into the water and swam towards me. I was still pretty far away and just moved on.

Re: While fishing Little Caney - 02/26/15 03:51 AM

I fished a tourny back in the mid 90's and seen one laying on the bank. There was a house up on the hill and it looked like a decoy because it had no movement. We fished normally and when we got about 4ft away in the water he came. He laid just below the surface and minded his own business. It had to be 8ft tip to tail. Have not seen another since.

Re: While fishing Little Caney - 02/26/15 04:34 PM

There are gators on Choke that would eat that one. And a lot of em. Quiet a few on Coleto Creek and Lake Corpus Christi too. In fact, I don't think I've ever fished a day on Choke without seeing at least a couple.

Back in about '08, when the lake was full, I went way up a creek looking for beds. The creek was fairly deep, but no more than about 15' wide, so the boat took up most of it. Finally got to a point where I could turn around and headed back out. About halfway out I noticed a gator, medium sized one, probably 8-10', on the side of a high bank right next to the water. I didn't see him on the way in and must have passed within 5-6' of him/her, about as high as my midsection. They don't often attack humans, but this one could have taken me out without me ever having seen him coming. Hugged the other bank on the way out....pucker factor was high.

Use to see a lot of nutras out there.Im sure the gators had something to do with their decline.

Saw that big un in duck four years ago on my first trip to Fork. Was way in the back, flipping some grass mats. Saw one mat move and figured it was a fish. Boy was I wrong. A frikin monster came out of that mat I was fishing and climbed on a lay down log. Have a pic on facebook, but don't know an easy way to post. Had to be 10+++.

Exactly where I saw it in white oak in September , It had it's head barely out of the water and thought it was a stump, pitched to it couple times never moved, then I realized the stump had eyes roflmao

If I owned property on Fork I'd assume there would be a gator on my land at some point. Probably kind of like deer, you only see the tip of the iceberg.

About 10 years ago, there used to be a big gator in and around that old pond just south of the mouth of Long Branch, too. I've also seen it up in the south fork of Long Branch. It was an old one with an almost-white head.
