Best reel for light lures

Best reel for light lures - 12/25/12 08:43 PM

I need to find a reel that will throw really light baits like a "Crappy Crank" etc. I am not a fan of Curado's (Personal Preference nothing against them). I always used the Daiwa TD-Z's but they discontinued them and all of mine are really tired. Suggestions please.

Calcutta 50 is easier on the pocket book just not as much distance.

Core 50mg....and you don't have to limit it to light stuff either.

Revo mgx handles the light stuff well.

I've grown to like the pro-qualifier for light baits. Dual braking and they're like 99 bucks.

I use an Ambasseduer 4600c spooled with 10 lb line even drop down to 8 for some things. I have Shimano Chronarcs and the cores in the 50 series but still prefer the 4600c for the really light stuff.

Get another Daiwa because they are mag drag. The centrifugal drag Shimanos don't spin as easily. Trust the "1",the FZ1.

Revo sx

Re: Best reel for light lures - 12/26/12 03:18 AM

I use a Revo sx for nearly all bait casting but you didn't specify you were looking for a bait caster. I also use a Shimano Saros 2500 that is smooth as butter for casting any light weight baits. Have two and love them.

I know of someone that throws mostly light stuff. He uses these reels (5.9 ounces):

Re: Best reel for light lures - 12/27/12 05:28 AM

I throw a lot of weightless. The Revo SX was good, the STX is better. Once you get the brakes and everything set, they really perform well. I have one dedicated to light/weightless that I NEVER touch the settings. Works like a charm.

I disagree 100%. I felt that way at first but the right baitcasting combo can do just about anything you need it to do.

Well I 100% disagree with you. That is just my opinion/preference.

Re: Best reel for light lures - 12/29/12 05:25 PM

A good spinning set up is a great investment. I throw small topwaters, crankbaits, and even tiny swimbaits during the shad spawn on a 6'9 medium falcon cara spinning rod with a 2000 size Stradic c14. I use the same setup for drop shotting and shakey heads but with a smaller reel. You'll appreciate it when you can really sling a little jerkbait or prop bait out there a ways.

Have you tried E-Bay?

Re: Best reel for light lures - 12/30/12 03:47 PM

At one time I would have said the ABU Record 40, but mine seem to have tightened up over several years use and there are some bearings that are hard to get to to service.

Daiwa Sol is a fantastic light line reel. They are also no longer made but you can still find some around. I purchased one about 3 months ago and it looks brand new. I have 3 of them. I personally like them better than the Shimano 50 MG and that is a fantastic light line reel also.

I throw a Diawa Fuego using a Kistler Helium 7' Medium. This is my "weightless" trick worm set up. I use a Steez reel and 6'7" Steez rod for yellow magic top water set up.

Agreed. I wish I had the need for a reel. I really want to try that new diawa. Looks like it would make a nice reel for throwing shakey heads.
