Amistad has been pretty terrible the last few yrs. You can win most tournaments down there with 15-16lbs. A couple of yrs ago 11lbs and change won a tourney with 40+ boats.

Because it's been frickin cold as heck both times they've been there. It's a mudhole lake, they always fish bad when the weather is nasty.

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 02:36 AM

I have to defend my Joe Pool,,, I caught 3 over 9 there this year, and average 15 fish a day although there are lots of short fish...MY TOUGHEST LAKES ARE...Fork even though she's my fav(I had a tough year with the long turnover)..Raybob is either on fire or dead water..Lewisville is tough for some reason (AND THERE IS ALOT of fish there).. Cedar Creek (post spawn)..#1 Ray Hubbard (out of the river)
Posted By: ogles824 (aka Lakewaydr50)

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 03:02 AM

With me it was any metro lake, I fished Lavon, Joe Pool, Ray Hubbard, Grapevine, and Lewisville......they all delt me misery......I know its just a different style of fishing and once I get the "feel" of these I'd be good to go. I'm just used to fishing flooded cypress lakes and rivers and these lakes are different from that. I struggled for a litle while on Fork too but seat time changed that as well........

Aquilla is usually an easy lake.... most always can catch fish there and nice size fish.... I like Aquilla.

If there are lakes tougher than Whitney has been this past summer, I don't want to fish them.
Posted By: Rickmb

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 12:16 PM

Any lake I fish at......
1. Medina (could get really tough if the lake dries up completely!)
2. Canyon (are there any big fish in there?)
3. LBJ (dodging skiers in the summer...)

I haven't been around that much but that is my short list.

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 03:25 PM

Alan Henry is killer because you have this idea you might catch a hog on any cast, only to have your hopes crushed almost every time. Just when your about to quit, it might give you that good fish to make you drag out the pain for another year.

Hard to complain though. That lake has been pretty good to me over the years.

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 04:16 PM

Alan Henry gets my vote hands down. I have fished it multiple times a month for four years straight now and I still get skunked sometimes. The only thing that keeps me going back all the time is that occasional giant you catch that makes it all worth it. My next 4 lakes are OH Ivie, Conroe, Rayburn (trying to catch anything over 10"), and Caddo at times.

Posted By: Thad Rains

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/27/12 08:01 PM

For those that have trouble with Alan Henry, drop me a line or take me with you. I hvae been VERY lucky on that lake, haven't zeroed at all, even when fishing from the bank. Of course, I still need to get the video tapes put into DVD form and plots locations so I can sell the DVD. I filmed the lake at 20', 30', 41' and 52 or 53' depths (same GPS location, deepedst part of the lake I found). Looks like there would be quite a demand for it. My uncle used to own Gobbler Creek and I have ridden horses all over the lake. I know where 10 tank dams and 28 springs are located, so, I guess I just get LUCKY at that lake a lot. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

When was the last time you went to Amistad? I guess it proably isnt one of the crappiest lakes, but why drive more than an hour or so to fish it. Look at the tourney results over the last few yrs. You can catch a better sack at a lake within in hour of you. Guranteed!

Most on this forum don't know there is such a place. It's in my top 5 hardest and I grew up fishing it nearly every weekend.

Alan Henry would be my number one. Partly for the fishing, partly for the outrageous price you have to pay to put a boat in it.

True, but i don't think i've ever blanked on houston, ever.

I know I've blanked dozens of times on conroe.

My heaviest Houston stringer is heavier than my heaviest conroe stringer, but my heaviest conroe single fish is heavier than my heaviest housotn fish.

i rarely fish conroe though, and living 3 miles from the ramp at houston, i fish it too much prolly..

Plus on houston i don't have to fight the scarab wakes in the summer..

No, apparently they dont have the luxury of fishing: Choke Canyon, Medina Lake & Canyon Lake. Bunch of crybabies dont know what it means to live in the armpit of the fishing world. I'd take Amistad on a bad day over the other 3 on a good day.

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 11/29/12 09:12 PM

I know Choke is no where near what it use to be, but I must suck on Amistad. I use to catch good fish out there. Now all I catch is a boat load of dinks. I feel more confident going out to Canyon to try and catch a 5lber than I do going to Amistad to try and catch one.

Alan Henry is the suspended bass capital of the world. The conventional methods rarely work here. Catching bass in less than 20 ft of water happens about 8 weeks total on the year. If someone has other observations please pm me and clue me in. I'm a noob with sub-par graphics, but confident in technique. On the other hand, go with me to a playa lake and ill show you how it's done...gotta schedule a guide soon...

1. Lake Lewisville - Even BASS stopped coming here. Just look at the weights from the last 4 years of tourneys held there.
2. Ray Roberts - She will play with your mind and make you cry
3. Tawokani . when the lake gets low she can become a much ole quick.

They all kick my butt except Amistad. I feel very confident on that lake and always catch them one way or another. Other than that they all stink to me.

Falcon was tough weeks ago, its gotten much better... not as it used to be years ago but I wouldn't say its one of the 5 toughest lakes!

Love me some raybob Aquila lbj granburry and even joe pool. But Benbrook I hate that lake I can get from my house to the ramp In five min. And I would rather make an all night drive day trip to falcon. I have a buddy that catches a bunch of big bass out there but idk just can't do it there.

I had 7 smallmouth from the bank yesterday. I bet if I was in a boat and could fish more than one small area it woulda been a good day.

Re: Top 5 Toughest Lakes - 02/03/13 07:29 PM

Stillhouse isn't all that bad. Belton is okay for a goid ol fashioned dinkathon for blackbass however it's a pretty good small mouth fishery. wouldn't be surprised to see a state record smallie out of Belton.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Belton, but then maybe out of towers have a different perspective about this lake.
