Shush- keeping a great new bait secret ...

I came across a great bait that nets me some HUGE fish. A guy was fishing it at the Calif. Delta and I told him that I KNEW it would be a slayer. He said he'd never got one on it (had just started tossing it, but only for a few minutes and then put it away). He gave me one, he had two. I couldn't wait to use it, and I'm getting better with it.

Usually I 'tell all' in my reports, and leave the bait I got it on in it's mouth for the pics I post. BUT I've kept this to myself, even making one friend that back seated with me swear to keep it under wraps too. Weird huh? He went and bought one, and is now getting some nice fish too.

So today, a friend walks up and takes a look at my baits when I got back in, and now I realize I've got to cut it off before I get back.

Ever felt you had to do this? I know I'm getting more fish because the fish don't see this, and I also know if everyone fished it the success rate would drop a lot. Maybe I'm getting wiser? Once it's out and I see it around more I'll revert to leaving it in the pics.

I don't fish tournaments or club events, but I guess that's normal procedure huh, keeping baits secret, or at least patterns, not too many new baits out there really.

Makes no sense to me whatsoever!....If you want it to be your secret , then fine, don't tell us about it........Now ,of course, I want to know all about the lure since you ratted yourself out.........Think of all the sleep i'm going to lose over not knowing.

I don't keep baits secret and I don't believe bass know that this is a new bait and should strike it.

Otay Michael is one of the best guys you would ever have the chance to meet. I, among many others, offered him a spot in my boat a couple of years back when he made his trek through Texas.

He is a bit eccentric at times, (he is an artist after all - and a damn good one at that) and I think his post is reflecting some of that.

So for those that don't know him, how about laying off the character attacks.

Well, I'd never kept a bait secret either.

As far as a bass knowing if it's a new bait or not, all I can say is this: I was out with a pro at Clear Lake a year ago, and he said he was given a certain large swimbait, that I was then tossing, and had absolutely 'killed 'em' on it all over the lake a few years earlier. That was, as he said, before everyone got the lure and started using it. Umm!

Well, these fish are caught and released for the most part (where talking fours or fives and up), and once they've ate it once or twice, the chance of them hitting it again, it seems by this guy, and now me, is greatly diminished.

I also heard that a lot of the big bait fisherman had not reported their main pattern was that of a bass. Heard that on a radio interview recently. They had bass patterns for many years before it got out. Interesting is all I'm saying.

If I get onto a bite that I think others are overlooking I'll put the rods with that type of bait up before heading to the ramp and leave the ones I'm not catching anything on the deck. Then tell everyone I whacked em and quickly put those rods up as if I don't want them to see the baits on them. One time was on a good jig bite and had half the lake throwing a deep diving crankbait then switched it up when the bite changed and everyone had already gave up on the crankbait.

Just looking for his 15 minutes of fame!!!!!

Thanks, I thought I might of heard more honesty, as I believe your example is not as rare as is being reported. I did not start the post to tease, as some think, but to get a feeling of how many keep things tight-lipped. I do believe it's from some of us maturing that we change our behavior. Most pros over here make no reports what-so-ever, and I too am starting to making less.

I still give help when folks ask, as you' ve probably noticed even on this forum.

So where's this open bar?!?!? Man I need a drink...... I mean fish.
