Choke Canyon

I'm heading down to Choke for the first time next weekend (May 18 - May 21) and I'd really appreciate any tips or areas to fish on the lake. I'm taking the family and I'm hoping to get everyone onto some good quality fish. My little cousins are tagging along so it would be great if I could get them hooked on fishing at an early age. Can tell you it's fishing extremely tough. Took clients out yesterday on falcon that fished it for 4 days with very tough results. Go to four fingers and fish the points and coves on the right. Find grass..... Bigger fish are on the outside of the grass lines. 3 fingers and dam area can and will produce fish as well. Rick the owner of choke canyon lodge will also steer you in the right direction. Good luck and hope you hook them youngins on bass fishing.

Most of the better fish are deep with the lack of grass this year. Spinnerbaits/square bills have been working on windy points early then start dragging the c-rig. As jay said work the outside edge of the grass with plastics and fish the deeper points. It worked for us a couple of weeks ago.

I fished choke last sunday, I agree it was pretty tough. It was very windy in the morning so we had to put in at the 99 bridge. We pulled a few fish early near the boat ramp off square bills. After wind settled down headed to Mason point area, caught quite a few smaller fish on soft plastic, and ended up with the best of the day, a 6.59, at 2:30pm in the heat of the day. Funny thing was there was a boat with all kinds of sponsor stickers all over it fishing the spot I caught it out of for a good 20 min before we hit it, and caught it on the second cast. Just shows that the fish are there just have to give them what they want. All I can rec. is trying a bunch of stuff and hitting the same spots over again, will eventually get bit. Most were suspended on points in the pm, all my decent fish came on soft plastics fishing slllloooowww.

Fished there last Saturday and had very little to show for it. Be very careful with the low water level. I hit an underwater stump while going slow in over 20ft in what I thought was the river channel. I'm just glad I was not going faster. Some of the stumps now showing must have been wicked underwater hazards just a few feet of water ago.

Get down here. There is fresh water flowing in to choke canyon from recent rains right now and should be perfect when you get here. People have been catching fish lately despite some negative reports. Throw square bills, crank baits, spinnerbaits, and then some plastic. I like to fish 0 to 15 feet. Don't know how much the lake will come up , but it could come up several feet,I hope. I think you will have a good trip. I would fish from telephone pole point east to 4fingers and if wind gets up out of south come back across and fish around south shore boat ramps. Good luck!

Where is the the four fingers are? I'm not familiar with the lake at all.

Put in at the south shore ramp and head straight across the lake. This is four fingers area. There are two or three big coves there and lots of points to fish. You should get a map and look it over and stay in the main lake area. The back part of the lake is full of dead trees and stumps and if you don't know the lake you could tear something up. You can also fish the three fingers area, that's where telephone pole point is. These names are on the map if you get one.

Usgs says its up 1 ft. Should be some more coming from way up the Frio .
