Fluorocarbon or Monofilament?

Fluorocarbon or Monofilament? - 02/19/12 12:33 PM

Which line do you use?

I currently use Mono, 15lb big game for everything...

I fish primarily Eagle Mountain Lake, Fork and Tyler. I am beginning to not like the way the 15lb feels, it just feels to big and stiff to me. I was thinking of dropping down to 10lb Mono.

Is there times that you use different line weight? i.e. fishing a trap do you use lighter weight line to get the trap down further?

Thanks for any help...

Shallow crancking/top water 15# Big Game
Deep Cranking 15# Invizex floro
Flipping 20# Invizex floro
Jig/spro frog 65# Power Pro
Punching grass matts 80# Power Pro

I don't like Fluoro. Never have. I do use it for leaders sometimes. Otherwise it's T-Line from Mason Tackle Co, or Power Pro Slick 8 braid.

IMHO, no way I'd drop to 10 lb test on Fork. You're asking for a heartbreak.

I dont use mono for anything anymore except carolina rig leaders, and maybe topwater (which I use braid on now). Fluoro all the way for me

I only use mono on my topwaters, crankbaits. Worm & jig mostly fluorocarbon or braid. Braid for frogs or heavy grass flipping.

I'm pretty new to fishing, but made a early transition from mono to flouro. 14 lb flourohybrid. Itll be hard for me to go back

I use P-line CX Premium for "mono". It's a copolymer line with an outer coating of fluorocarbon. Very good strength and handling and low visibility under water. 15# for cranks, topwaters, jigs, traps, etc; 12# for finese lures with spinning gear, like shakey heads and small jigs. This combination will work well on Eagle Mtn., but I don't know if it's stout enough for Lake Fork.

You are not tying the right knot with the fluoro. I havent broken on the hookset in years, even at falcon on 7-9 pounders in the bushes. Make sure you wet the knot too as you cinch down. Otherwise you will break.

I personally like mono. I use Stren Original, 17lb for tx-rigged worm and jigs, 14lb for topwater, spinnerbaits, rattletraps and 10lb or 8lb for most crankbaits.

man trust me..i tried every knot and wet every knot ...i dont know whats up. maybe i got some bad batches of fluoro. the knot never broke on cranks ,just on worm or jig where u have the hard hookset. i know alot of people who love fluoro and never have any problems.

The only floro I trust is invizx and I'm real slow with cinching of my knots...make sure you don't pull down fast. Heat is the floro killer.

Do you use a glass bead between the bullet weight and hook? My dad used to do this and always broke off. The glas bead after a while cuts the line. Not sure if you know this but just putting that out there. I havnt ever had bad experience with invizx 20 lb floro. For mono I like to use 17 lb trilene xl. All of my reels either have 15 or 20 lb invizx or 17 lb trilene.

Mono for me is Trilene XT. 14LB-20LB.

Flourocarbon Berkley 100% Professional Grade in 17 or 20lb.

I still prefer mono for spinnerbaits, topwater.

I use flouro for cranks, jigs and worms.

However, I used 12lb flouro for worms and didnt like it.
I wont use less than 15lb for worms where I fish.

If you are fishing Fork or Falcon, I wouldnt go less than 17lb. test.

15 lb P-line for shallow cranks and top waters
20 lb Invisx fluoro for deep cranks
20-25 lb Abrasx fluoro for jigs and worms
Braid for frogs and grass punching

Caught them up to 13 lbs on above named fluoro without knots breaking

Re: Fluorocarbon or Monofilament? - 02/19/12 08:30 PM

12lb flouro for small cranks
15lb flouro for large cranks and plastics (tx rig c-rig)
15mono for top water
65lb suffix braid for plastics/jigs in heavy timber.

In desperate situations I will break out the spinning gear with 10lb flouro for drop shots

Thanks for all the answers everyone, looks like it is a lot of personal opinion on the different types of line/weight but I did see a lot of similar situations, I need to decide which rods I am going to use for which situations and spool them with the appropriate line.

I appreciate all the help.

Duo don't use glass beads and tungsten with a clicker between

The tunsten will chip the glass and will cut the line

If you have to use a plastic bead
