It depends on how cold the water is. The water below is constantly moving under your boat and will give the bait it's own action. Remember the colder the water the longer you let it sit there. You have to just sort of try out the fish to see what they like. Start by bragging and if it does not work then start slowing down and count each time and just add to the count on each cast. You will get the hang of it. It is going to take patience

Yea the place I'm fishing has a lot of grass and I'm a co angler. It's supposed to be about a high of 61 degrees, low of 48

If you go wacky get a lead head w/ a weedguard. Wacky is sometimes referred to as finesse fishing, but you can up the line and make it power fishing. The wacky would be a bit cumbersome if you are throwing up in the thick stuff, this is where you would go Texas. If you are going to be throwing around just patches of grass you would be fine. Try a beaver style or creature to offset it.

Would 8 pound P-Line Co-Polymer work or should I use braid?

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 01:31 AM

In winter I usually put a stick weight (1/16 oz) in the middle of the senko-helps when fishing deeper or in the wind.

I've caught a ton of fish during the winter on orange senko fished weightless in 1-3' of water in the grass beds from noon on. Just a slight pop with rod tip occasionally. Better fished with a warm sun in the shallows here on LBJ.

The closest thing I could find to an orange senko is a 5" Gander Mountain trick stick in crawfish orange swirl or a Trigger X Flutter worm in the #142 color pattern or a Berkley gulp sinking minnow in Pumpkinseed or a Strike king Zero in Bama craw

I agree. I've never had much luck throwing one with any weight.

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 08:36 PM

Do you peg the 1/16th ounce weight?

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 09:00 PM

Man just throw it weightless t rigged or wacky rigged on a 3/0 widegap hook and keep it simple

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 09:04 PM

Does every one use the yamamoto brand or other off shoots. I've made Gary a lot richer over the years.Love his bait but he has about priced me out of his baits.

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 09:12 PM

I never use anything but Yamamoto

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 09:15 PM

Does the Brand matter?

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 09:22 PM

Yamamoto and Pitbull are all I use unless pond fishing then ill use big bites

What kind of retrieve do you guys use with senkos in cold water

Re: Senkos in Cold water - 10/31/11 10:04 PM

Had some other brand senko (stick) type baits, but never cauight anything on them. But I didn't use them a lot either. Finally got Yamamotto and have had luck with that brand.

5" yamasenko pumpkin w/black fleck or w/green fleck serves me real well. Did great for me on Fork the last time I was up there in the late winter, two winters ago, just after the big snow.

My dad and I have torn them up at Lake Pinkston a few times in the last month using a Big Bite Baits 5 inch Sunfish Laminate Trick Stick. We have caught at least 10 on each visit, and on some days, upwards of 50. They seem to last longer than Senko's, as well.

I'll Be on the Potomac river where the water color is stained and the water is in the mid 50s with floating grass
